Autocad 2010 freezing and delays

Recommended Posts

I just installed 2010 and when I open the program, it acts like it is frozen or locked up. I decided to wait one of the lock ups out and it finally loaded after aproximately 5 minutes. Then when I start to customize my "Options" and ribbons, it does the same thing. Everything I do, the program has a very long delay. I can't even experiment with the program to see what is wrong because of the constant delays. 2009 works exactly like it should and I can't believe it is my computer:

HP EliteBook 8730w

Windows Vista Enterprise

Intel Core 2 Extreme Q9300

8 GB RAM

NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M

Will I ever be able to use 2010?

Strange indeed. I have no clue as to what would cause the vast difference in performance between the two versions. Have you tried contacting your authorized reseller? Are you on subscription?

What's your theme on Vista? I know when I had Vista, everytime I went to go use CAD, I had to turn Aero off...I would just change it to the classic theme and leave it there

Try that, and let me know how it works!

I have not contacted support because I just installed it yesterday. I am on subscription and plan on contacting them Monday. I thought I could get a quick answer from here though.

I do have Aero as my theme and I have noticed on 2009 that it would automatically switch to the classic view when I would open a window for the vertical application we use to draw our piping. But I never had the delays like I am experiencing now in 2009. After I changed it back to Vista Classic, it still didn't help though.

I have uninstalled, reinstalled, run a repair on it, and now I am out of ideas. I thought if I skipped the "Initial Setup" and bypassed the "New Features" options when I start the program up for the first time it would help. But it didn't. I never officially timed i until just now. 18 minutes to start Autocad. A little off from my original estimate. HELP!

My computer specs are less than yours and I am having no problem. Besides using Vista (ugh) what other software is running in the background? 18 minutes to load would drive me insane!

It is driving me insane. I can't figure it out. Nothing else is running in the background. I can get Design Review 2010, Navisworks 2010, Revit Architecture 2010 (trial version), and Autocad 2009 all to run perfectly normal. But for some reason Autocad 2010 will not. I submitted a service request ticket to Autodesk for help. Hopefully something will come out of that today.

Most people will tell you wait until the first service pack to be released before you install and use again. That's where most of the "new release bugs" are fixed.

OK, something really weird is going on here. Through Windows Explorer, I double clicked on one of my drawing files to work on it, thinking 2009 would open instead of 2010. When I did this the file and 2010 opened up just like it should. I closed out of the program and tried it again. It worked perfectly. I closed out of the program again and double clicked the icon on my desktop......more delays.

Is there anything in the Properties of the icon on your Desktop that is pointing to a file/folder location that it is struggling to find (i.e. a network drive or something similar) ?

No, everything is local.

Make a copy of the shortcut on desktop, go into its properties and look at the Target line. Replace the /p xxx with /p test. Now start with that icon and it will tell you test doesn't exist, do you want to create it, say yes. Does this now fix 2010 starting quickly? If yes then the profile it is trying to load may have some paths that don't exist, so don't use that one, create a new one and export, import it. Now change TEST to the one you just created.

I've been running Vista for over a year without issue. What problems are you having with Vista OS?

Vista is a resource pig. If you have your computer properly set up, as I imagine you would, there's little if any problem but many computer users buy computers based upon the minimum system requirements as stated by Microsoft. A big mistake.

After I submitted a support request to Autodesk, they gave a suggestion to load AutoCad 2010 from the start menu and also from the "C:\Program Files\AutoCAD 2010" folder to see if I got the same delays. I got the same delays from the start menu that I got from the icon on the desktop. But the acad.exe file under the "Program Files" folder loads perfectly. I looked into the properties for the icon on the desktop and compared it to the acad.exe file under the "Program Files" folder. The attached is what I found with the icon one on the left and the .exe file under the folder on the right. Why would these install differently?

The file in Program Files is the actual exe file, the start menu and the desktop are both shortcuts with extras added on. I can't read your images as the resolution is too small to be useful.

So, pretty much as I said before, once you have autocad up properly, set it up the way you want it and export, import a profile name and add that name to the desktop shortcut. /p profilename on the target line.
