I'm working on a university project — an oval/egg-shaped auditorium inserted inside an existing church.

Hi everyone!

I'm a first year architecture student and I'm working on a university project — an oval/egg-shaped auditorium inserted inside an existing church.

My professor told me to draw the elevation of the oval shape by taking points from the plan and projecting them upward to construct the curved profile (using straight lines between points to approximate the curve).

I understand the general concept but I'm struggling to do it precisely in AutoCAD. Specifically:

— How do I project the points from the plan to the elevation accurately?
— Is there a smarter/faster way to do this in AutoCAD?

I already have the floor plan with the ellipse drawn. The auditorium is roughly 20m long and 8.5m wide in real life (scale 1:100).

Any help, tutorial links or step by step advice would be hugely appreciated. Thank you so much!

Perhaps this would help after you determine the primary dimensions of desired ellipsoid.

If the only thing you need is the elevation (not the entire structure), you can create a new viewport showing a side view of the plan. That way you're using the same points to construct your profile.

After that you can build the profile in the same way you built the floor outline. You may need to do some research on coordinate systems and view manipulation. You'll also need to put the pieces on different layers so you can freeze the parts you don't need to show in the various viewports.

If you need more detailed guidance, tell us what you've done and what isn't working.
