I have layers called e.g Con-Blockwork and layers called e.g. Con-Blk-Site. No prob creating Layer filters to display only Con's and Blk's respectively - but the Con's include the Con-Blk's. I can't work out how to make the ~ exclude the Con-Blk's from the Con's.

It doesn't look like you need the ~ at all, one filter would be CON-BLK*, and another would be CON-BLO*.

Yeah but I've got lots of Con's, like Con-Ashlar, Con-Fittings etc, which only filter Con* will select - but that also selects the Con-Blk's, which I want to exclude.

No, sadly it doesn't. In Layer filter Properties under Name, in 1st line I have Con*; in 2nd line I have ~Con-Blk*. All the Con-Blk layers still show, as well as the Con layers

The first and only line should be ~con-blk*

Then I get everything that isn't Con-Blk*, which includes my Ex layers E.g. Ex-Walls, Ex-Roof - which I only want to see in my Ex* layer filter.

So it's not possible to set up a layer filter which includes Con* but excludes Con-Blk*?
