ks-man Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 I have a document that was created in Adobe Illustrator. I also have the document as a PDF. I've tried a bunch of times to export the document to a DWG and DXF file but when I open the file up with a CAD viewer (currently using AutoDesk DWG True View, the drawing is messed up. Mainly the circles are not round but rather oblong shaped. Other parts don't look right either. There are certain parts of the drawing that do look correct but it seems to be mainly the rounded parts that are having problems. Can anybody help me figure out a way to create a proper CAD file from this AI file? To have it redrawn in CAD is going to be expensive and seems like a waste since it was already created in AI, but the new company I'm working with for a project doesn't use AI. Thanks. Quote
tzframpton Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 There actually might not be anything wrong with the "rounded parts" in the Viewer. Just for grins, try this: go to Tools > Options and under the Display Tab, make sure the "Display Resolution" settings are adjusted for optimal visual representation. "Arc and Circle Smoothness" should be 1000 minimum. In AutoCAD (this includes DWG TrueView) just because a circle or rounded object doesn't display properly doesn't mean it's not "round". It's just a display problem. Might not fix it, but worth a try. Quote

Also, what does "Segments in Polyline Curve" mean? It is defaulting to 8. Thanks again. Quote
ks-man Posted June 4, 2009 Author Posted June 4, 2009 One other question. Since I'm using TrueView rather than AutoCad, I can only view the DWG, not modify it. Everything looks fine when I view it and I can measure all sorts of points. The goal is to provide this to the new company I will work with so they can modify it. They do have the full version of AutoCAD. Will they have any limitations with modifying the document since it was converted to CAD from Illustrator, or once it is a DWG, will they be able to modify any of the Paths and other information? Thanks. Quote
tzframpton Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 If they have AutoCAD, they will have full capabilities to the file. Nothing will be restricted. Quote

Thanks, so just to make sure I understand, there really isn't any difference if they want to modify an AI document (after it has been converted to DWG) or if they redraw it themselves using AutoCAD? The reason I'm asking for clarification is I don't know if they will try to "talk me into" letting them start over from scratch rather than working from this new DWG (which originated as an AI file). I just want to make sure I'm armed with information in case they go that route. It's not that I'd expect them to, but you never know, especially when it would mean an extra 20 hours of labor in a slow economy. So am I correct in saying there aren't any benefits to them rewriting the file in AutoCAD rather than adopting the DWG I created for them from exporting an Illustrator file? Thanks for all of your help. Quote

Shouldn't be at all. If you want, *.ZIP both files, and upload them so I can review them for you. Quote
ks-man Posted June 5, 2009 Author Posted June 5, 2009 Shouldn't be at all. If you want, *.ZIP both files, and upload them so I can review them for you. The files are too big to upload. Is there are way to shrink them down? Quote
tzframpton Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 send me a PM and i'll give you my email addy. Quote
ks-man Posted June 5, 2009 Author Posted June 5, 2009 I don't have access to PM yet. How do I request getting PM rights? Quote
tzframpton Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 ah, need ten posts or more. I'll delete my email after you send it **email deleted.** **Post up here when you send it so I can delete my email. Sometimes it takes awhile for "new" emails to arrive in my inbox. Quote

tzframpton Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 One more legit post and you're in. Don't worry about Cad64.... he means no harm. Just post a question somewhere else or something. lol Quote
tzframpton Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Just checked out the file, I have to say AI exported this file extremely good. Being a CAD designer I had no problems getting in there and editing the DWG. Everything was spot on. You should be good to send it off as a *.DWG file. Quote
f700es Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 KS-Man, do a google search for DoubleCAD XT. it is a free autocad like program that can edit dwg files. Might come in handy in the future. Quote
