arlarson Posted April 11, 2014 Share Posted April 11, 2014 So I just started using autocad today and I unknowingly created a drawing in inches when i thought I was drawing cm. I know how convert the dimensions from inches to cm so 1 inch will be 2.54 cm, but is there a way that I can convert 1in to 1cm? So not a conversion more like just switching the units. If you typically work in metric then you will likely need to change your QNEW template from the default template used in Autocad, which will be Imperial units. Right click inside your COMMANDLINE, then choose OPTIONS. On the FILES tab you will find the TEMPLATE SETTINGS, as shown in the image. The template which you browse to and choose will set your personal default template to be used whenever you hit the NEW icon, to start a drawing. The metric template names end with ISO. Looks like Murph beat me to mentioning that. Once you are using an appropriate template, your default and viewport scale lists will stop displaying Imperial scale references, like 1/4" = 1'. If you are working on an existing drawing which has been done with different data base units than you want, then JD's suggestion is definitely the way to go. Read the commandline prompts carefully, go slowly, until you better understand what will be done to your drawing. As you are new to Autocad, just remember that you draw in Modelspace, and you draw EVERYTHING full sized 1:1, regardless of what it is. If you haven't already discovered , there are lots of good Tutorials available on this site, follow the TUTORIALS link at the top of the page, and http://www.we-r-here.com/cad/ is a very good place to get started teaching yourself. I used it when I was starting to learn the software and it is very well presented, starting from scratch. I hope you enjoy CAD as much as I do. The commandline version adds the options of rescaling modelspace entities to match the new units setting, and paperspace too, should it be desired.
