  1. Hello, I am an architectural archivist - not an architect. I am trying to convert dwg files to IFC. I just export to IFC in AutoCAD 2012. It then creates an IFC file and a log file. The IFC file then doesn't open in AutoCAD. Why is this? Also, this is what the log file says and I'd like to know what this means: [DefaultDomain: ]EXPORT STARTED: 2/17/2014 2:50:27 PM [DefaultDomain: ] ============= Object Count: ============= - AcDbBlockReference : Total: (287) Fail: (287) - AcDbRay : Total: (2) Fail: (2) - AcDbSolid : Total: (4) ** = Object classified as other IFC object. [DefaultDomain: ]EXPORT ENDED: 2/17/2014 2:50:30 PM In addition, under Export, if I select Other Formats, and try to export to IGES or IGS, nothing happens. Why is this? and what is the difference between the two files? Thanks for your help, I am only trying to preserve some architectural history

  3. Hi, This is my first post. I hope someone can help me. I have been given a file initially made in Solidworks that consists of the front end of a car made with surfaces. I have the Solidworks file as well as a IGES export and a STEP file version. The ultimate goal is to slice this model into 1-1/2 " slices so that it can be exported to BobCAD/CAM and milled. I have tried creating a plane off to the side of the model and drawing a pair of rectangles then extruding a cut through the model. Inventor does not allow me to even select the cut feature (I think this is called 'subtract', sorry I am not in front of my Inventor PC at the moment.) My question is, how can I take a 3D model made entirely of surfaces, and make a set of cuts so that I am left with only a slice of the model, which I can then export as an IGES or STEP file to be milled? I am fairly well versed in Inventor, but only making solid parts, not working much with surfaces. Thanks.

In my last job we designed boat hulls in Maxsurf and then exported iges surfaces to Catia for all the structures/styling/fitout/drawings etc. If we made a change to the hull we just re-exported the iges, brought it into Catia and then repointed any operations (trims, extracts, offsets etc.) from the old surface to the new one. In fact, there was a shortcut so you only have to repoint one operation, but thats not what my question is about... I'm now with a new company and we design boat hulls in Maxsurf, export iges surfaces and then use Rhino and AutoCAD for everything else, which is as painful as it sounds. I've persuaded them that we need to upgrade to the 21st century and the programs in the running are Inventor, Solidworks and ProE (budget won't stretch to Catia this time). My question is (I got there in the end!): Can you do the same replacing of pointed iges surfaces in Inventor as you can in Catia, and operations will update? I've been doing a lot of research and one thing I've learnt is, just because Catia can do something, doesn't mean the others can... Thanks in advance for your help
