An attribute is simply a piece of information attached to a block. For example, the block can be of a desk. The attribute could be the name of the employee that occupies the desk. It could also include the employee's ID number and telephone extension.

What field do you work in? Perhaps we can provide you with an example that is more applicable to your line of work.

This sounds very interesting and could help me save alot of time, changing names on desks. how can i create an attribute from a desk block i already have.

Or how can i set a new block up to have the intelligence to do this?

As this is a rather involved subject I suggest you first turn to your Help file and check out what it has to say regarding attributes. It should tell you how to create and edit attributes as well as how to extract the information.

Search this site as there may have been previous threads regarding attributes.

Purchase a good aftermarket AutoCAD book. Every such book that I have ever read has a chapter dedicated to working with attributes.

Use Google to search for online tutorials regarding attributes.

Post further questions here. Sorry I cannot be of more help right at the moment. Perhaps another member can expand on the subject. I promise I'll check back in with additional information later on.

I think Mark has covered it well enough but I would add that you need to get the attributes into your block.

I usually define all my ATTRIBUTES using ATTDEFF, draw the rest of the block and then use the BLOCK command to create a block with attributes. This block can now be inserted into your drawing to see how it all works.

Attributes can be added to blocks using BEDIT or REFEDIT and then adding your ATTDEFs into the block. If you do this you will need to ATTSYNC the block to get the new attributes "registered".

Thanks, Dave. I was going to cover that in Part 2. I thought that by breaking it up it would be easier to write, read and perhaps understand for a novice.

Sudhir:

ATTdef is shorthand for attribute definition. It is a command line prompt one types in rather than going through the pull-down menu. Different action but same results.

OK Sudhir, here is Part 2. I caution you that it is a very brief explanation. Attributes are a powerful feature of AutoCAD and as such can be as simple or complex as the user wishes to make them. My advice is to do some further reading and to experiment with blocks and attributes.

Once again, I'll ask other members to read this text as well and let me know where I went wrong or what I could do to improve it. Thanks, in advance, for any comments and suggestions.

You're welcome, Sudhir.

I'm currently working on a follow-up part 3 which will cover some odds and ends associated with attributes and hope to post it within a day or two.

In the meantime, was your last sentence an offer to write a tutorial about layer states manager or a request for information? I'm not sure.
