    Can't Label Combined Surface Contours

I've never had this issue before and it's beginning to drive me bonkers! I have a combined surface that I've created from an existing topo file and a couple of new survey files. But I cannot label my new surface. When trying to add a single (or multiple) contour label, the drawing will not allow me to select the surface or a contour line. I can click my cursor all over the place and it will not select the surface, and I have to hit Escape to exit the command. Once I am out of the command, the surface is easily selectable, but for some reason it will not let me label it. How do I label this surface?
  2. Hi there, I have multiple elevation labels that are all reading horizontally. I would love to be able to rotate them individually so that they are flush with my property lines or back of curbs, etc. I know I can change the rotation in the style but I'd hate to make a whole bunch of different styles. I don't really want to explode them, I want them to remain a elevation and upadte as soon as my surface changes. I've read some forumns on this which says you can't do it, but they were from 2005, 2006 time and I'm sure I've seen it done before. Is it possible? Or if anyone else have a suggestion on an alternative, that'd be great.
