Locking portions of a drawing

I am working on a specific portion of a big drawing. Is is possible to lock the portion where I am not working to prevent it from any modifications.

2 thoughts come to my mind...

 

1 - use layers for each "section" of your drawing, and lock the sections you are not working on.

 

2 - Use Xrefs. Make each section a separate drawing and Xref them all together in one master drawing.
