Is there a tutorial somewhere on how to draw title blocks properly? What layer to use, how to get it to scale right, putting in texts, and whatnot. I can't find any on google...

Never mind, I finally found out about the LAYOUTWIZARD command, and I have the option to insert a Title Block.

New question: what type should I put it in as - block or xref? This is what I have:

Also, how do I get it to scale properly? The Title block would go way off page. Hope you know what I mean. If not, I will take another screenshot of what the problem is.

Thanks!

You should be thinking of a template. A template holds not only the title block but also it has all your layers, dimensions, text and other goodies as well.

Before making a title block you should know what size paper you want to print.

Then figure out what you want your margins to be and that will give you your titleblock dimensions.

Say I want to print on 24x36 and I want a ½” margin on the top, bottom and right sides and a 1 ½ on the left because I use a binder to staple all pages together.

The height would be 24 – 1 = 23” and the width would be 36 – 2 = 34”

Now either us an existing one and make changes or make one from scratch.

READ THE HELP FILE

Titleblocks can be simple or complex (I like simple)

You might use attributes or fields (look these up in help)

When done put the title block on a layout tab and do a page setup for 24x36 then use the dialog box to position the X&Y if needed.

Make sure you have all the layers you want to use for everything and all you text styles and dimension styles. You can also have typical blocks though I suggest using the toolpallet

You might want to create a cover page as well.

Now you have a model tab and a cover tab and a page tab.

Saves as a DWT close the drawing and open a new DWG choosing the saved file as the template. When opened it should be a DWG not a DWT.

So now when you make a new tab all the info for printing will follow because you set it in the page setup.

There is a lot more involved but you will have to take it one step at a time

Why is the title block way oversized when I use LAYOUTWIZARD to insert a title block? I just want to understand how the program works.

You'll notice that in each instance the Layoutwizard gives you a title block and border. It's also a good idea to keep in mind the paper size you're working with. What did you select for paper size and what title block/border were you interested in using?

I was going to print it on 8 x 11 paper. I might print it on bigger paper later but for now it's 8 x 11.

I think I will go with the architectural block in the LAYOUTWIZARD, although I am working on mechanical drawings. I don't know what "Generic" means as indicated in the photo above.

It is inserting incorrectly because it does not automatically scale (even though it bothers to ask you your paper size). It is set to print to ARCH D size paper. It isn't particularly elegant but you can always scale it down (around 0.33 should work).

You can also build your own title block- I can't post the link here as I don't have enough posts yet, but I did find a pretty good tutorial on the woodweb site, entitled "Titleblock in CAD"

I would insert as xref if you have multiple drawing files with the same border, and insert as a block if it's all on one file, then you can use attributes. Attributes don't show up when xref'd.
