From 2D (map with lines) to 3D in a fast way?

I'm using AutoCAD 2009 to create a 3D model from a 2D model (an old map of an ancient fortress). I have some skills in AutoCAD, but mostly in 2D. Regarding this project I do have 2 questions (the second is the most important one):

 

- I have allready created a 2D file from the map. But this map is saved separately from the drawing. Is there any way to save them both in 1 file? Now I always have to plug in my USB stick, because the map is saved on it. Otherwise the map is not loaded into AutoCAD

 

- I have started to 'convert' the 2D drawing to 3D by adding heights to intersections and then connect them. The result is thus a 3D wireframe (but not actually 3D). I found a way to make it 3D by using the 3DFACE command (and marking every corner of a figure), but it's time consuming. I wonder whether there is a 'fast way' to do this?

Forget about 3dface and the other obsolete surface tools. R2007 and later has surface tools you can use to create solids. You might start with the tutorials in my signature and then sign up for a 3D class.

 

Keep in mind that your design will have a lot of symmetry which will make the job much easier than initial impression.
