Useing Auto Cadd 2008, going through some drawings and seeing .dwl and .dwl2 files. What are they? and do I need them? can I delete them?

.dwl is a drawing lock file, it should be automatically deleted when the dwg is closed.

There not deleteing, can i delete them will it somehow mess up my drawing?

No, will not delete your saved *.dwg file.

Deleting the .dwl file won't affect the drawing. If the dwg that the dwl file is associated with is open, you won't be able to delete it.

I wonder why they aren't being deleted...

What Styk said and sometimes the .dwg file will only open as read only if a .dwl file is inadvertently hanging around. I've run into that a few times where I have had to hunt down the dwl and delete it.

Submitted by "Casey" at the AutoDesk Discussion Groups in response to a similar question re: DWL file.

"It's a drawing lock file created by AutoCad / AutoCadLT that prevents two

people from opening and modifying the drawing at the same time."
