convert 2D plans to 3D model?

i've used 3dsmax a lot, but never AutoCAD, and am wondering if AutoCAD has a facility to automatically create a 3D model of a house from a set of 2D plans

 

I'm guessing it doesn't, & that the task itself is a reasonably complex one - but, that efficient workflows do exist to do it

 

anyway, my speculation aside. if anyone can explain how to do this thing, point me in the direction of a link that explains it, or explain their workflow i'd be very grateful

 

[ plus, if anyone uses 3dsmax in this workflow either as well as or instead of AutoCAD, i'd be interested to know about this too ]

If you've used 3DS Max a lot, then you must already know that there is no magic "Convert to 3D" button. Not in Max, not in Autocad and not in any other program either. If you want to build a house, just like any other type of model, then you have to start from the ground up. You can use your 2D plans as reference, and you can even select and extrude parts of your plan to create the walls, doors, windows, etc., but you have to do the work. The program can't do it for you.

Besides the aforementioned polysolids I think you'll find the subtract command handy as well.
