Timeout Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 I found that my AutoCAD Map 3D 2009 has suddenly decided to hang (and not save) when I try to save my drawing. This happens when I use command line save, or saveas, or File menu, Save as etc. Windows Task Manager reports that AutoCAD is "not responding" which is pretty obvious, so I close it using Task Manager. Strangely, clicking on the Save icon in AutoCAD will save the drawing (to its original location) without a hang. As my immediate job is a simple one I cranked up my old AutoCAD LT 2004 but I find that it too refuses to save in the same way as Map 3D 2009. Both of these programs are properly licensed of course. I have allowed my annual subscription to lapse (Oct 2008, due to retirement soon) so I haven't approached Autodesk support. But you guys know the answer, don't you? My Autodesk dealer is puzzled and can't offer any good ideas. I should add that my operating system is XP with all the service packs and updates, running on a pretty standard Prescott 3GHz machine. Same everything as when Acad was saving without any trouble. Plenty of hard drive capacity. 1GHz RAM (yes, I know that's not much these days but it worked OK before). All other apps on my system behave perfectly well, including Word and Excel 2007, Photoshop Elements 7, etc. Quote
Coosbaylumber Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 I am getting same situation as you are recently on a few 100 to 40 meg sized files, but in using R-14 instead. If I use any Windows program it will then be a waste of time any revisions made. For Windows will not release the memory it once assigned to those softwares, no matter how small they were. My solution is to reboot, then do not open up any single program, but go directly to Acad, and open up the problem drawing. Then, near imediately do a Save-as, and once done the problem never returns for that particular drawing. After this 30 second waste of time I can then go about normal editing. It will happen on others though, and have to then go through routine once with each of these. Cannot even Zoom to extents or whatever. Must have something to do with memory handling. Wm. Quote

Timeout Posted August 11, 2009 Author Posted August 11, 2009 Thank you gentlemen (and ladies?) for your suggestions. But I have found that the problem is in Symantec-Norton 360 version 3.0. There is a difficulty of some sort in 360 ver 3 for systems with AutoCAD installed. You would think that Symantec could be a little bit helpful by advising AutoCAD users (surely they can examine client systems and see if AutoCAD is installed) that they have a fix available on their site. But no, we have to spend hours or a day or two frantically searching around while a project deadline rushes towards us. I really should have tweaked that my AutoCAD difficulty had followed my upgrading of Norton 360, but I was doing other things than CAD for a few weeks after the Norton upgrade. I am not permitted by forum rules to post a link, but if you think you might need this fix, try to follow this trail: Go to Norton Support Find Top Tech Issues Select Norton 360, version 3.0 Select I cannot run a specific program after installing Norton 360 Version 3.0 Select AutoCAD Click on the Download button Run the file (only takes a second or two) Restart PROBLEM SOLVED! Thanks again and all the best. Quote
Coosbaylumber Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 I do not have any Symantic or whatever loaded on to the computer of trouble here. What then is causing the bomb-out problem? Wm. Quote
StevenMc Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 more RAM? sometimes solves alot of AutoCAD problems as you will see in this forum. Quote
ReMark Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Coos: Try doing a little housekeeping. Delete BAK files, empty the Recycle Bin, clean out Temporary Internet files and check how much free space you have on your hard drive. I'd suggest that you defrag too. Quote
StevenMc Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 i use a program called ccleaner that is good for getting some rubbish out of your computer. Quote
ReMark Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Does ccleaner fix Registry errors too? Registry cleaning programs can introduce their own form of chaos if not used with care. Quote
StevenMc Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 it has the option to clean up unused file extensions, applications fonts etc alot of that registry stuff but it gives you the option to chose what you want cleaned and i have all the stuff under the registry part unticked as i do not want to mess about with the registry. Coosbaylumber Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 more RAM? sometimes solves alot of AutoCAD problems as you will see in this forum. I go by booklet given to me by dealer/vendor and the motherboard has all the Mem. it can absorb at present time. Apparently, the M-S system will take more, but it say to check the M-B first too. I have tried adding Too Much, and it still reports in the basic at POST time. And, as Mark mentioned, have already done a whole bit of Housekeeping. The little available resources says I am using only 96 to 88 percent of what is available. An awfull long ways from using it up, or needing more. I got it set up to be turned on or off, and usually is turned off. Was told that Windows sine 95 will automatically assign memory to useable application. Got zero in the Start Up folder too. Once I open up one of the huge files, that is when it is likely to blow. If I can get past first couple of minites of use easily, then know I am OK. Wm. Quote
ReMark Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Windows 95??? You should have made the jump to Windows 98 SE. I would check the settings for virtual memory. May need a boost. Quote
