Nostromo Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 Hi all I trained in autocad 2d and 3d back in 1992 on release 10 and gained City and Guilds qualifications in both. At the time CAD was a buzz word and I learned it at my local college just because it sounded interesting and to my supprize I was top of the class and learned it faster than others in my class. I thought that this would be a door to a career. Unfortunately things didn't work out like that and I spent many years doing construction work in various guises. More recently I have been working as a surveyor and using Autocad to draw plans and elvations etc. 3d modeling was what I always wanted to do most but again thats not how things panned out. I have recently been made redundant and I am now trying to find some cad work. I have had a few opportunities but more employers now want you to have good 3d skills. I have unfortunately found that I seem to have been left behind in the cad world since my humble beginings and now dont have the relevant skills. Is there anyone local to Preston Lancashire that would have the time and skills (say one evening per week) to help be pick up on things. Any help would be good, I have spent all day today trying to get to grips with things but just cant figure out how to use the tools provided. I have an interview in the morning as a cad operator and just know that I am going to come across as a complete amature. A 3d modeling career is all I have ever wanted and now think I have missed the boat. Quote
ReMark Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 With a modest investment in time I am sure that you will once again be at the top of your class skills-wise. Yes, things have changed a little (new commands and features) but I would not be so quick to write off your career just yet. Quote
Nostromo Posted October 19, 2009 Author Posted October 19, 2009 I would not be so quick to write off your career just yet. Thanks ReMark. Should have more faith in my own abilities. Interview seemed to go really well with no negative points that I could mention but have 4 others to beat. Wont know the outcome for another 2 weeks. Seems like a fantastic opportunity with a company that build private pools. They seem to have a full order book so should be recession proof for a while. I still think I am going to have to get my 3d skill level up to scratch though, I have been to busy earning a living to keep up with training issues. It doesn't seem to matter when you feel secure in your job but you never know when the tables will turn. Quote
ReMark Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 No time like the present to polish those skills. I suggest starting with a good after-market AutoCAD book. There are a few that are specific to working in 3D. You should have no problem finding them. Quote
