Leader length for dim that won't fit

I have my dimensions set to use a leader to show a distance where the dimension won't fit between extension lines. But when it places it, the leader drops too far down. Does anybody know a variable that can adjust this? I really hate having to manually adjust everytime this happens. Thanks in advance.
