Something I have come across for years now, wondering what the deal is with people using the 'DEFPOINTS' layer to place entities on. I know they will 'not plot' on that layer but with the no-plot toggle in the layer manager now, and the ability to create non-plot layers with that toggle, why are people still using the 'defpoints' layer.

Just wondering why people are still using it, I see work from multiple sources, companies, etc all the time with people putting entities on that layer, why?!? Is it just from previous versions prior to the non-plot toggle and just being stuck in your ways? (BTW, I am not trying to offend anyone here, just curious about it so please don't take it the wrong way).

As you can tell, it's an ongoing issue I see all the time, just a bad habit or what?!? It's so annoying trying to delete items on that layer during drawing cleanup (when you isolate it, you can't click on any of the entities so you have to screw around freezing/turning off everything else then deleting/moving the items, etc.).

You nailed it.

Its just like people who drawing titleblocks in model space and then scale them because they can't learn to use viewports.

I guess that is it, figured that much, just annoying to see it all the time, especially since the non-plot toggle has been out for as long as I can remember, must be a decade or more, who knows. Actually I wonder which version it did come out in, must have been 2000 (no earlier) as I recall the paperspace/modelspace layouts back in that version (I think).... hard to remember 10 years ago........ hint hint, time to change.

I think it is probably just old school having a hard time letting go myself. I find myself being guilty of this even though our standards manager has a layer in it for no plot layers.

One thing I noticed about your OP is the quote above. Are you aware that if layer zero is frozen or turned off it will prevent you from selecting the ones on defpoints? That is why you can't clean them up if your using layer isolate. Defpoints was created for dimensions back in the day for the insertion point (i.e. nodes) of extension lines so I don't see it going away in the future.

Guilty as charged. On a handful, less than 5 out of 3000 drawings, I've used the Defpoints layer to put notes to myself. Old habits die hard. Which way to the gallows?

Yeah I will have to remember that for sure, as I run into this all the time trying to select after isolating, thanks for the tip!! Don't have a problem with the defpoints layer, just with non-related entities being put on there on purpose as to 'not-plot'.

Do the condemned men get a last meal?

Ha, I suppose..... 5 out of 3000 drawings, yeah we'll let you have a meal but no alcohol, no tobacco (just like prison) and limit it to $40, sorry.

I don't use them but I can see if someone wants to ensure the info doesn't get plotted then put it on defpoints. There is no way to plot what is on defpoints but someone could toggle off the noplot very easily.

Lets not forget that DefPoints can cause really weird problems if you use it. :)

What problems have you encountered or heard of? I used defpoints quite a while before switching over and was never aware of any problems.

Thanks.
