2009 crashing 4-10 times a day?!?! and other dramas.

I have been running AutoCAD 2009 full edition for the last couple of weeks now and i haven't had to many troubles with it till this week. i was using it in std format and getting used to it. nothing out of the ordinary except the odd crash if i asked to much of the system or did something stupid with the huge drawing i was working on. but come monday i had had enough of the terrible layout so i decided to customise a ribbon tab and a pallet for easier use. since then it has been crashing on me a fair bit. i'm not sure if it is my PC that is the issue or the software or the drawings i have been working on. i have worked on a couple of different drawings now and one imparticular is FAR worse then the others. however it is HUGE. (72,888KB)

i also have 2008 on my machine here at work and i have simular problems in it but nowhere near as bad. i have also used a mates PC that i know is WAY better then this machine i have here at work and not had one single drama in 2008. and i used one of my colleague's laptops here at the office and it didn't have to may problems in either 08 or 09. it would seem to me to be a PC issue but i just want to make sure before i try press the boss for a new PC.

i have also noticed ribbon tabs dissappear from time to time?? WTF?

i'm really getting the *&%# #$%^* with this!!

can anyone help? is anyone that is using 2009 having simular dramas? is there a fix to this? how can i tell if it is the PC the drawing or the software?

any help would be greatly appreciated and i give many thanx in advance!

yeah i kinda figured it was the machine. but i haven't used 09 on anything else yet so i wanted to ask if anyone else was having the same probs?

the specs i am unseure of. but i will find out if it helps any. our IT guy says it is one of the better ones in the office. but he is away for a week so he is no help to me at the moment. lol

Yes, it will definitely help to know the specs of your machine. It would also help to know what operating system you're running.

And just because the IT guy says yours is one of the better ones, doesn't mean that its good. It just means that it's not as bad as the other junky ones.

Start > Control Panel > System > Device Manager.

What version of Windows are you running?

Have you downloaded and installed SP1 for 2009?

How much RAM do you have?

How larger is the hard drive (capacity in GBs)? How much free space is there?

When was the last time the hard drive was defragged?

What type of graphics card are you running? What is the make/model? How much videoRAM is onboard?

Start > Control Panel > System > Device Manager.

What version of Windows are you running? XP Pro 2002 SP3

Have you downloaded and installed SP1 for 2009? how and where do i do that? how do i find out if the IT guy has done it or not. he spent 2 days on this machine "cleaning it up" i have no idea what he has done.

How much RAM do you have? 2Gb

How larger is the hard drive (capacity in GBs)? 149Gb

How much free space is there? 104Gb we work off a server. and NO saving the files to the C: drive makes no difference.

When was the last time the hard drive was defragged? a week or 2 ago. when i first strated having troube with CAD.

What type of graphics card are you running? ATI FireGL3100 x 2?

What is the make/model? ??? does the last answer not explain that? not sure what more you need on this one but if you explain how to find that out i will try. :)

How much videoRAM is onboard? not to sure how to find this out either.

it has a

Computer

APCI Multiprocessor PC

Display adapters

ATI FireGL3100

ATI FireGL3100 Secondary

IDE ATA/ATAPI Devices

Intel® 6300ESB Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 25A2

Intel® 6300ESB Ultra ATA Storage/SATA Controller - 25A3

Processors

Intel® Xeon™ CPU 3.20GHZ

Intel® Xeon™ CPU 3.20GHZ

Intel® Xeon™ CPU 3.20GHZ

Intel® Xeon™ CPU 3.20GHZ

does that help any?

oh and my problems are getting worse. it is crashing more frequently now.:( could it just be the install of 09? i'm going back to 08 for the day.

your machine seems to be within the specs required. The RAM however being 2Gb possibly DDR2, will not be sufficient to run a Drawing at 78Mb.. Autocad 2009 is very hungry on Graphical User Interface and uses alot more resources. 4Gb still crashes for us about once or twice a day and those files are around 50 to 60Mb each.
