I'm trying to create a decent-looking 4' fluorescent light, however all the options, including the light from the AutoCAD tool palette, are uni-directional, like a spotlight, whereas a real-life light shines in all directions. Of course, I also wanted the physical bulb itself, and at a minimum of rendering time. My initial incarnation was a cylindrical web light, however it didn't seem to render properly. I realized that this was because of the target direction, which, unfortunately, was also the direction of the cylinder and, thus, the light coming from the cylinder. I wanted the length more than the omni-directional nature, so I ended up with a linear point light. This worked well until I tried to add a bulb; a highly transparent cylindrical solid. This shot the rendering time to kingdom come. I realized I needed a merger of the two: the faster-rendering cylindrical-shaped light, plus the properly-oriented linear light. I did some browsing and found out about those .ies files. I created one from scratch, essentially taking the cylindrically-shaped light and manipulating the target so that it shined in all directions (using the .ies file, that is). This worked fine... for a while. I tried to create an animated walk-through using draft-level rendering. The walk-through was created without incident, but upon playback, it would go black at random points and remain black. When I try to render afterward, I get a message that there is no render-able geometry in the drawing. When I click on a light fixture, I get the message: "The photometric web file is not valid." I've done some googling on this and found zip, save for one Russian forum that seemed to suggest putting the .ies file in my search path, despite the fact that it's linked directly. I did it anyway, and nothing changed. I know the file is valid because I created it based off of the AutoCAD help file and it -will- render before I try to create the walk-through.
