Rendering Idea

Hello I have a possible idea for cutting the rendering times down for big projects. sounds good eh... well im not sure about the feasability or mechanics behind the various processes involved and have decided to pitch my question to the knowledgeable people on this forum.

In much the same way as a file sharing site operates. is it possible for many subscribers to join together and to if you will allocate a small amount of rendering space on thier perspective machines for users to render with like a render farm but much cheaper and possibly faster. I think this way you could have possibly millions of computers at your disposal.

So in conclusion a high powered render farm that operates in the same way as a file sharing site (lots of people subscribe)...With a small fee of course. Is this possible??

Rendering farms are possible. My experience in house is that you need to match exact machine and software specs. Video cards mainly. Otherwise you can tell where one machine started and stopped. -David

thanks for replying david very good information. o.k so the many users of said site could be matched by machine spec. or lower specs could possibly be upgraded saving the need for high end computers therfore bringing top quality rendering to those without a high machine spec.

You realize that if you are part of this network, and someone on the other end decides they need to render out a large job so they pick your computer to use as part of their farm, all of a sudden your computer will cease to work as it is now rendering someone elses job. Also, everyone would have to leave their computers on all the time and have the server software up and running full time so that all computers would be available 24/7. You would also have a bandwidth issue and transmittal of information back and forth over the web would be a problem. Also, as David mentioned, computers would have to be matched according to specs and also the version of Max that's loaded on them. The logistics of trying to organize and coordinate something like this would be extremely difficult. But let us know if you figure out how to make it work. :)

FYI: When we set up our farm at work, we tried it two different ways. First we set it up to render across the server, from my computer to the farm over the network. Then we set up an isolated farm, not connected to the network. The isolated farm rendered faster than the one on the network. Granted, it was only a few minutes faster, but it was faster. So I think an in-house farm would be much faster than trying to network render over the internet. But again, let us know if you figure it out.

Hi Cad64 just an idea that is all. i am no expert and will explain myself.

"You realize that if you are part of this network, and someone on the other end decides they need to render out a large job so they pick your computer to use as part of their farm, all of a sudden your computer will cease to work as it is now rendering someone elses job."

The idea is to allocate only a set amount of mem somthin small from each machine . the service will not work if there is not enough machines avilable. being there are a lot of users out there with diff time zones ect. this might be poss:wink:.

"Also, everyone would have to leave their computers on all the time and have the server software up and running full time so that all computers would be available 24/7."

this could be possible with the ammount of users out there, diff time zones ect.:)

"You would also have a bandwidth issue and transmittal of information back and forth over the web would be a problem."

This i am unsure of

"as David mentioned, computers would have to be matched according to specs and also the version of Max that's loaded on them."

Covered this area with hardware and software matching.so many users again it might be poss.

"The logistics of trying to organize and coordinate something like this would be extremely difficult. But let us know if you figure out how to make it work"

Really this is just an idea nothin more. And yes you will be the first to be informed if this fantasy ever gets off the ground:D

Thanks for the comments, and yes, the entire scene was built and rendered inside Max.

It’s a pretty basic scene really. No fancy modeling techniques, just standard primitives that have been extruded and modified to create the various elements. Just cubes, spheres and cylinders. The cables are just splines that I Enabled in the Viewport and Renderer and then applied a thickness to them. What makes the scene special is the lighting and materials that I used. The only lighting comes from the monitors. I placed Omni lights inside each monitor and allowed the light to escape only through the screens. Then I applied full self-illumination to each screen which makes them look as though they are lit up and emitting light. Then I rendered out several different passes, (Diffuse, Specular & Shadow), and then I used Photoshop to composite the passes and get the effect I wanted.
