sagaro Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 hello, i am sorta new to the "rotate" command in 3d views.. here is a smaple of my problem. i have drawn a circle on the x plane, its not a plain circle its actually made up of 30 lines around the circumference. i am attempting to make a dome shape with triangles, now each of the triangles will need to be slightly tilted towards the center of the circle. now the top of the circle is along the Y axis. so for the first triangle i must have the top corner at lets say, 5 deg. so i switch views and draw a line on the perimeter tilted 5 deg. towards the center of the circle, and that is very easy. when i switch my view, so that i can take that line, and tilt it in the z-axis, i tilt it in the z axis so that i can form my triangle. but i cant seem to keep the 5 deg tilt in the y axis, after i tilt the line in the z axis.. any suggestions?? rkent Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 I would use the UCS command, Object options and pick one of your 30 straight lines. Now use UCS, X, -5. Use Polygon, 3, Edge mode, pick end points, Set UCS to World, array, repeat all the above. Quote
sagaro Posted January 26, 2010 Author Posted January 26, 2010 i dont quite follow u there... cant u please be a little more clear for us " newbie" drafters. i did try to do something with spherical coordinate systems.. @(strut length i want towards the top center) Quote
rkent Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 i dont quite follow u there... cant u please be a little more clear for us " newbie" drafters. i did try to do something with spherical coordinate systems.. @(strut length i want towards the top center) So you have a polygon with 30 sides. First align the UCS to one of the 30 sides. UCS, 3, pick left end, right end, move cursor up and pick an arbitrary point. Now your UCS is aligned to a side. Now we need to rotate the UCS in by 5 degrees. UCS, X, -5. This will rotate the UCS so that the Y axis is angled in to the polygon. Now use the Polygon command, 3 sides, Edge option, pick the two end points, the same ones you used to align the UCS earlier. Now you need to array but first set the UCS back to world. UCS, World, enter. Now Array, specify the center, pick the triangle, specify the number of sides (30), OK. Now Start at the first of this but now pick two peaks of two triangles rather than two end points for the UCS, 3 points portion. Repeat.... Quote
sagaro Posted January 26, 2010 Author Posted January 26, 2010 forgot to mention, the sides are not all the same length... so an arbitrary " shifting would not work Quote
