Dims that round up

Hi there,

 

I do a lot of setting out drawings for my projects and one thing that we do is round the dims up or down to the nearest 0mm or 5mm.

 

For example; if I put a linear dim between two opposing walls and it turns out to be 2457mm. I would then use manual text overide (in properties) to change this dim to with 2455mm or 2460mm. Given that no builder is ever going to build one wall exactly 2457mm away from another, also that the surface of the wall is never going to be 100% straight/flat along its entire length anyway.

 

Is there a way that I can insert this linear dim so that it automatically rounds up or down to the nearest 0mm or 5mm, also so that it adjusts if a wall gets relocated without having to manually change the figure/text in properties. Because once you use manual overide the 'real' text value doesn't change with the dim.

In the dim styles editor go here. Enter your round off increment to suit.

Is there a reason the walls etc can't be spaced (in the drawing) at the 2460mm dimension that you're rounding upto? If you're gonna build it that way you might as well draw it that way. You could then use associated dims, which would update with the geometry when/if it moves.

THe building is existing and we are gutting it and introducing new compartment and internal walls which will be set off from and exsiting grid line system. Within that we have to give priority to things like stair and coridor widths. By the time we get to the living rooms and bedrooms, they are whatever space is left which is usually an odd number. Cheers.

Aaah, ok. Thanks for the explanation. I've never been in your line of work, and we make everything from scratch, so it's interesting to see how things are done in other disciplines.

mm's, really? Here in the colonies, in residential construction, we tend to pretend there are no objects or distances smaller than 1/4". Carpenter's pencils have points fatter than that.
