Issues with drawing in Autocad 2010

Hi there, I am having an issue while drawing my project.

After a couple of hours spent happily drawing my floor plans i found that when starting a new line or trying to finish a line off it would not 'snap' to the line or end of a line that i had clicked near, it would also not let me choose a line to start from to make sure that the ends are joining etc. Sorry if that is a bad example but im unsure what the technical term is.

I also noticed that when I selected the entire drawing it wouldnt let me click on the little squares that would normally be at the end of lines and didnt have any of these at all. I have tried restarting my pc, restarting autocad and i am not having any luck. Sorry again for the terrible explanation.

If anyone can give me any advice on how to fix this i would be very grateful.

The little squares you refer to are "grips".

The snaps you refer to are controlled by your Osnap settings.

Make sure too that Pickfirst and Pickadd are both set to 1.

To enable grips you must go to Tools > Options > Selection tab. The checkbox for enabling grips should be in the lower right-hand corner of the window.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I tried both of these which where already set to 1, tried setting them to 0 then back to 1 and it didn't make any difference.

When i click an individual line with out any tools selected i get blue grips along the line apear allowing me to move the lines etc but not allowing me to draw from them.

I also noticed that when i high lighted say half of the floor plan the blue grips would appear but then when i chose the rotate or move tool they would disappear

Edit: I checked to see if grips where enabled and found that they where turned on.

I think that you are getting confused between grips and object snaps.

Grips appear at the ends of lines, at nodes on plines and splines, at insertion points of text and blocks, etc.

They enable you to 'grip' the point and move it.

Object snaps are mostly in the same places as the grips but these allow you to to draw new objects to meet the existing object at the selected point.

Which points you can snap to depends on the value of the osnap variable, you can set wether you want to snap to ends, centres, intersections, etc. It is easiest to set it thru TOOLS > OPTIONS

Attach the file here.

I have attached the file.

Yeah, i think i am having issues with osnaps and the grips.

I went into tools>options>drafting

Where i found a section on snap settings, i have everything ticked other than Display autosnap aperture box, replace z value with current elevation. The alignment point acquisition is set to automatic.

Should any of these be different?

In your snap settings I would uncheck the 'nearest' option.

If you have this checked then you will snap to the bit of line nearest to the cursor rather than the endpoint that you want.

Hi thanks for the help, where would I find this option? i looked under tools>options>drafting but I couldn't find an option like the one you specified.

I don't think that is my issue as when I draw it is not snapping to anything but I might be looking at the wrong settings so I might find what I need to change.

Edit: fixed the issue, i typed in osnap in the command bar and a menu popped up with the osnap settings and i didnt have osnap enabled. The shortcut for it was F3 which i had probably hit by mistake.

There is also an icon for Osnaps at the bottom of your screen.

Or for us 'old skool' types, just hit F3 to toggle osnaps on and off :)

Hi Enigma; thanks for the remider about the F key.

Helsinki; sorry if I got it wrong, it used to be labled as that in the options in earlier versions.

Try typing 'osnap 631' on the command line, Im going from memory here from a macro that I use but cant check right now.

It should give you the most used snaps, (Unless Autodesk has changed the codes).
