The meaning of point groups?

Hey! I have a question and that is regarding the point groups in civil 3d.. I just want to know their purpose of what they are used for? Can you have it exported to your field computer in survey?

 

If I ie have a drawing with a building in it thats going to be exported in someway to a field computer for staking out walls, pipes etc. What is the best method for this? Can I use only cad for this?
