Cad64 Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 Just Google Free 3D Models and you will find lots of sites that offer free downloadable content. Here's another good site: http://modelsbank.3dm3.com/ Quote

I'm looking for (a decent) truck (tractor) and a railroad car. (just need the wheels really) I'm finding mostly 3ds/max/ etc. Quote
Cad64 Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Most of the files on those sites I posted are .3ds files which can be Imported into Autocad. Quote
dumfatnhappy Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 that was my next question actually can you point me to a thread explaining? Quote
Guest Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 humm.. I didn't know that you could import 3ds files. Its actually quite easy to do. From the FILE menu pick IMPORT, then change the file type to view to *.3ds and bring it in. Quote

Cad64 Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 No, you have to Export a .dwg from Sketchup if you want to bring it into Autocad. Although I don't think the free version can do this. I think you have to buy the Pro version. Quote
dumfatnhappy Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 you are correct sir! However I went to google warehouse and found all the models I thought I could use.... downloaded the Pro version (you get 8 hrs to demo full use) and converted those models to dwg's. It worked like a charm (although I had issues with scale on some). This should last me for months if I only use to to convert. thanks for the tip Cad Quote
skipsophrenic Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 I wonder if the next free sketchup version will allow the export? Quote
Cad64 Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Not likely. The ability to Export to other programs is one of the features that sets the free version apart from the Pro version. Quote
