You know when people render a object and they have this clean white background environment with the objects shadow casted a on a surface and the surface shows the objects reflection ... just so that it doesn't look like its floating in thin air ...

 

How do i get that sense of whiteness? Cos the only white bit i get is the falloff from the spotlight i use and anything outside the spotlight is darkness ...

Try changing the "Falloff Angle" in the Spotlight Properties. The higher the number, the softer the transition from light to dark.

You can do plane surface with reflected material(eg.white plastic or reduce shining value from this) under your models.Then you can add background color as you like.
