I'm new to autocad 3d. I have always used inventor or solid works. Now my boss wants me to do some 3d work in autocad. I have managed to guess my way through it so far but i would be much faster if i had the correct workspaces. right now i only have the option mechanical, mechanical classic, and structure. Any ideas.

There's no option for plain AutoCAD via the Workspace Switching button in the System Tray?

If not...

Type Workspace on the command line then press Enter.

Then type SE for "Settings".

You should be able to enable the 3D Modeling in the Workspace Settings dialog box.

So are we to assume you are using Autocad Mechanical?

Your profile states that you're using plain Autocad, and the title of your post says Autocad 2011. It's very important to specify exactly what version of Autocad you are using.

Instead of starting Mechanical you could start vanilla AutoCAD (Mechanical runs on top of vanilla). But if you have Inventor, why use an antiquated program like AutoCAD? I guess you could save the files to dwg if that is what the boss wants.

Sorry i have mechanical. I had inventor at a previous job. I tried to tell my boss that autocad is a 2d environment but I guess the saleman told him otherwise. They don't even teach autocad 3d at the school I graduated from. If I open autocad "vanilla" will this work correctly? If so how do I go about doing this.

Instead of starting from the desktop icon go to Start>All Programs>Autodesk>AutoCAD Mechanical>AutoCAD to start vanilla AutoCAD. If you would like an icon on the desktop right click and drag to the desktop.

....autocad is a 2d

If you thing 3D is difficult in AutoCAD wait till you try to do 2D in AutoCAD, you will be pulling your hair out.
