Unreconciled Layers and XREF changes always changing back to original

Alright the issue that I am having is with Reconciling layers and my Xrefs. I will go into the xref manager... Reconcile the layers... change the color of all the layers in my xref to what I want... save... DONE. However, I will go back into the drawing and I will need to reconcile the layer again and the colors will be reverted back to the original and NO one is making changes to the xref. I will even reconcile the layers, change the colors, save, close the drawing, IMMEDIATELY open it back up and everything is reverted back!!!! I know all the little tricks to just stop getting the unreconciled layers, however the colors keep changing back. The save isn't recognizing the color changes of the layers or that I have reconciled the layers.

Please help an increasingly frustrate MEP user. Thank you.

is this something to do with variable VISRETAIN?

Agree with designerstuart, explore the VISRETAIN system variable.

Amazing! For some reason the drawings from the architects had set the visretain to 0. Thats a first for me. Thank you!
