x y z coordinates

Hello to all...I need some help in what I think is a Civil 3d question. I was given a text file with more than a 3000 lines all with x, y and z coordinates all separated by tabs. I was also told that you can bring all of those coordinates into civil 3d as contour lines. I am lost here and have no idea on how to do it. Can anybody point me to the right direction on how to get started?

Thanks...N

Civil 3d doesn't read tab delimited files to my knowledge.

This is what I would do:

First you need to format the data if it is not already formatted. It needs to be in the format of say the following:

POINT NUMBER, EASTING (x), NORTHING (y), ELEVATION (z), DESCRIPTION (the description is optional, you don't have to include it)

The easiest way to do that is to go Data tab -> From Text wizard in Microsoft Excel, import it as a tab delimited text file, delete any columns that are not the x,y or z data, insert a new column to be the first column, enter the starting point number in that first row of the first column, increment it +1 in the second row of that first column and drag down in excel to fill all 3000 rows of that first column with unique incremental cogo point numbers.

Then in Excel, go save as and save as a Comma Delimited File (.csv) in the drop down save menu.

Back into Civil 3D and go Insert tab -> Points from file, choose format 'PENZ (comma delimited)' in the pop up drop down and load your file and if you saved the file correctly in the data format (PENZ) above, the points will then be imported.

Then you obviously need to create a surface (and thus contouring) from those points. If you don't know how to make a surface there are lots of tutorials available for free on the internet.
