I'm in an online course and nearing my end date. One requirement is to skin a biped and then submit .avi movies testing the different joints to show the mesh deformation. To my nightmare, as soon as i click on a 'render output' saving location, i get this Image I/O error every time. If i unclick 'Save file' in the 'render output', it gives the warning that no location has been selected for saving and I may lose the renders, which is what happens. I went to the smallest output size, in case it was a memory issue, but i still get the same issue. I read that it is best to render each frame, in full production, and then use another program to put them together into an .avi but i can't even do that since i can't save a location through the render output. i can save through the quick render but that will take some time to do 40 frames of each joint showing the testing and deformation of the mesh to the biped structure.

My platform is Windows XP Professional sp3, i'm using MAX 2010 student version and all minimum requirements are met. I believe it is something with the file saving location issue since that is what is selected when it gives me this error. I also did make sure the file folder i was saving to was not 'read only', as that was another solution i saw for someone that had the same issue.

Thanks,

Walt

yes, i did. that was what gave me the idea to try much lower resolutions but i still received the same error. I was initially using the 640x480 and that was already triggering the error so i went as low as 200x135 with the same results. I'm working with an Intel core duo dual-core processor so that should not be a problem and 104 gigs of free space. I can't imagine that will be where the issue is, here.

Let me try the split render. i did load the split render code, last night, and prepared it in the way you said via notepad and placing in the script folder but didn't try it, yet. I had to stop for the night or i would have flushed the laptop down the toilet.

seems the split render tool is not for making a .avi movie file. it only renders out a current view port or camera image. Any other ideas that may work to render out this low poly character's joint testing?

I haven't tried the split render script, but I thought it rendered out still images that you could compile into a movie file?

I don't do animation so I don't really have much experience with it.

Is your operating system 64 bit?

Here's another good thread regarding this issue: http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-3ds-max/autodesk-3ds-max--3ds-max-design-2010/image-io-error/

Hopefully someone else will come along with some words of wisdom for you?

I've been granted the answer! In my case, when you would select a location to save your rendered animation to, the AVI file compression setup, located in the 'setup' button of the 'Render Output File' dialog box, would not allow the quality slider to move. it was locked at 0. I started down the Compressor list until i came upon MJPEG Compressor, which permitted the slider to move. once that was selected, everything worked just fine.

Thanks for the input, CAD64.

I have a 32 bit system. Apparently, MAX doesn't enable all of the compressors in its selection set and defaults to the top of the list. I checked the AVI file and looks great. That may have been the answer the other person needed that used the splitrender script.

You are correct, the split render can do full renders but it doesn't give the option of where it is saving the renders to. I assume it defaults to the MAX 'render output' folder. It doesn't give the option to select location.

Never-the-less, i thank you for your input and help.

Glad you got it figured out, and thanks for the info.

This is a 'print screen' image, for all you MAX Nubies To Be that may have the same issue. This shows where i had to go. It was a 'compressor' type issue which you can get to via the 'Render Setup' icon by your 'quick render' icon.
