Hi,

I need some help with scale in Layout. I drew my drawing in mm , and I want to use Layout to print it like I saw in a video, but how do I scale my drawing? For example, the counter and shelf I drew is 1:1 in the Model workspace(1600 by 2000mm) but in Layout, for printing on to an A3 sized paper how do I get it to print in 1:40 or something of that sort?

Right now I'm printing by using Fit To Paper with the dimensions included, but I notice our contractors are using 1:30, 1:40 etc. , my boss doesn't mind since I include the dimensions but I reckon it might cause problems in the future.

And is it possible to just select anything in my selection window, even 3/4 of a line? Because right now, I can only select the whole line no matter what, I only want 1/2 of it because I want to cut the whole drawing in half and move it apart.

By the way, is it possible to customize the panel? Instead of switching between tabs constantly, can I make my own panel? I googled this and tried using CUI but it is confusing. I just want certain sections grouped into 1 bar. Like... Draw/Modify/Attach/Windows all on the first panel.

Forgot to ask, I really want to be able to type in certain commands without hitting Enter, is that possible? If I hit M, it will move the object without me hitting Enter. Can that be done? Maybe not M, maybe Alt+1 to move, Alt+2 to Scale etc. etc. , kindda annoying having to hit Enter.

Thanks.

First thing, Alway Draw in 1:1! You already do this from the sound of your post but I just want to make it clear that you are doing it right :)

Second, your question. In the Layout, start the MVEIW command to create a Viewport. A Viewport is kind of like a window to your Model space. After you have created it, you can double-click inside the Viewport to activate it and pan around to find what you want to see. After that there are multiple ways to set the Zoom-factor on your Viewport. I use the small square at the bottom of Autocad where it says 1:1 (or some other scale) and set a scale while I am inside the Viewport. Use the Custom... -option to create your own scales. Then doubleclick outside the viewport to de-activate it, highlight the Viewport (click on the border, rightclick and select Lock Viewport (so you don't accidentily change your scale).

Then when you plot, you can use Scale 1:1 and get it correct. As you suspected, it is bad practice to use Fit to Paper when plotting.

and as for the commands, there is no way to avoid using enter...... except:

you can use space instead - much easier! or right-click.

if you want to use the last command you used, just hit enter (space) again

use up arrow to scroll through your commands already used

look into altering your .pgp file if you want to change the commands. it's easy but you still have to use enter. save a copy before you mess about!

This is entirely possible. Consult your AutoCAD Customization Guide for starters. Also take a look, here at CADTutor, in Michael's Corner. Michael Beall covers all types of customizations in his monthly articles. There is a link at the top of the page.

Thanks for the replies, really helpful.

I'll look into the customization guide, gonna borrow Mastering AutoCAD 2010 by George Omura tomorrow based on amazon reviews.

By the way, does anyone know how to select only what's in the selection window? The drawing I did is of a Front view but later on I discovered that the table is actually bent, which means the length is different from the original Front view.

I want to "cut" the table in half, showing where it's bent then paste it somewhere else to show the Front view of that portion. But I can't figure out how to slice the drawing... anyone?

Selection window from left to right with blue background selects only objects ENTIRELY WITHIN the selection box. Selecting right to left (green background) selects all objects touching the window.

Try Section Plane Home Tab, when in 3d Workspace. Or copy the object, Slice and create a new viewport. Use the Viewcube for different views of your Viewport.
