-attedit not recognizing certain blocks

2011 trying to change an attribute on a certain (set of the same) block, Global attribute edit returns:

"0 attributes selected. *Invalid*"

if I use the block name. Some block names work, some don't. (Checked, double checked syntax and grammer, case, all the usual suspects)

blocks can be edited by all other means, attribute extraction works fine. Seems like all the blocks in question may have been made by editing a similar block.

Global works with the blocks in question when an astrick is used for the block name specification as well. Like Something is wrong with the name.

Example:

Names that work:

! L90

! T125

Names that don't work:

! S350

! S600

! H600

Thanks in advance--

Al

You will need to post a couple of the blocks for others to test.

if the block is small enough it can be added to a post as an attachment found somewhere on the "go advanced" button.

I often find that unattributed blocks occur when someone modifies a block and alters the attribute and doesn't ATTSYNC the block so you have a set of blocks in various states.

Attached file "Block_that_doesnt_work.dwg"

Contains 2 blocks,

Block ! S350 (that doesn't work):

Command: _-attedit

Edit attributes one at a time? [Yes/No] : n

Performing global editing of attribute values.

Edit only attributes visible on screen? [Yes/No] : n

Drawing must be regenerated afterwards.

Enter block name specification : ! S350

Enter attribute tag specification :

Enter attribute value specification :

0 attributes selected.*Invalid*

Block ! L90 (that works):

Command: _-attedit

Edit attributes one at a time? [Yes/No] : n

Performing global editing of attribute values.

Edit only attributes visible on screen? [Yes/No] : n

Drawing must be regenerated afterwards.

Enter block name specification : ! L90

Enter attribute tag specification :

Enter attribute value specification :

7 attributes selected.

Enter string to change: MIL

Enter new string: 54

EDIT: actually, more like:

Command: _-attedit

Edit attributes one at a time? [Yes/No] : n

Performing global editing of attribute values.

Edit only attributes visible on screen? [Yes/No] : n

Drawing must be regenerated afterwards.

Enter block name specification : ! L90

Enter attribute tag specification : MIL

Enter attribute value specification : 43

1 attributes selected.

Enter string to change: 43

Enter new string: 54

Thanks--

Al

Also, the ! S350 block can be globally edited with an Astrix in place of the name:

tried this and it worked:

Command: _-attedit

Edit attributes one at a time? [Yes/No] : n

Performing global editing of attribute values.

Edit only attributes visible on screen? [Yes/No] : n

Drawing must be regenerated afterwards.

Enter block name specification :

Enter attribute tag specification : MIL

Enter attribute value specification : 43

1 attributes selected.

Enter string to change: 43

Enter new string: 54

Problem is I have about 400 occurrences of this block in tight proximity to lots of blocks that I don't want to change the MILL specification on!

That's odd for sure.

I have deviated from attedit anyway.

You may want to use Qselect, Select Similar, and the Properties Dialog box.

Thanks for the tip, got me out of a bind, still would like to know what is messed up with the block!?!?!

I tried erasing the MIL attribute and recreating it. It didn't work. Then I tried that same block with a brand new attribute. Same result. I think the block is broken somehow. But I'm not sure how.

Somehow the block name is broken.

Make some new ones I guess for the next project.

Thank's again for the quick reply and the "QuickSelect" tip.

Actually went Qselect> Name> = Equals> Value> ! S350 (or something like that!) and then changed the MIL specification in the properties fly-out box. Qselect recognizes the block by name, but Global does not. Only broken for Global. Inquiring minds would like to know why.

Thanks--

Al

and just to add more confusion....

I had to convert this block so that I could use it with 2008 but once it was in the drawing I had the same results as you (on all but one occassion!). I tried renaming the block, wondering if there was something "odd" there (don't ask why, just past experience) but that was inconclusive. However I did find that any new insertions of the block could be changed with attedit.

Oh well, I'm glad its not my problem. :)
