[Inv 2008] Create a rack without slowing down assembly

Hi,

I've made myself a rack since I can't find any function in Inventor to do it for me. I make a sketch of one teeth, extrude it and then copy it 20x and then 10x, so it makes a rack of 2m (each teeth is 10cm). I found copying it 20x10x was a little faster than copying it 200x.

When I use this rack in an assembly however, and move the face to fit the rail profile, Inventor takes hours to recalculate the whole rack! I tried to copy the rack so it's just a base part, but it doesn't seem to have any effect on the speed.

My question is: Is there any way to speed up Inventor from calculating the rack, or create a rack which isn't thát calculation-heavy?

I'm getting quite sick waiting for Inventor to finally rebuild my iAssembly :glare: It only has 62 occurrences and 21 documents opened. The PC I use is P4 3,4GHz with 3,25Gb internal memory, so that shouldn't be quite the problem. Also Autodesk sais you should be able to handle assemblies up to 1000 parts (see usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=8410923) with this configuration! I understand the PC will be a lot slower when you have about 700 parts in it, but 21? Nah...

Thanks so far,

Nick

content center didnt have a gear that would work for you? You may want to try drawing one revolution of your rack and make the rest of the copies associative. This way inventor dosent see 200 instances it only calculates for the one and applies it to the rest. This works for the mirror command(which may work in your case if you create planes where you need them). if you could post a screen shot this may give me a better idea of what we are working with.
