I was wondering if anyone knew the best way to create a 3D PDF from AutoCAD?

Yeah I have Acrobat Pro 9.

I can see how I can make the 3D pdf i just need my dwg file as a *.u3d file - anyone know a way to convert them?

I think you need Acrobat 3D or Pro Extended or a converter. Pretty sure there are not too many freebies, but you should find some free trials.

I found this on Wikipedia.

PDF with embedded U3D objects can be created by at least the following list of applications:

Adobe Systems Acrobat Extended allows PDF creation and conversion of various file formats to U3D within the PDF.

Adobe Systems Acrobat Pro allows PDF creation and embedding of pre-created U3D files.

Bentley Systems MicroStation allows export of PDF containing U3D.

Nemetschek Allplan allows export of PDF containing U3D.

AVEVA Review allows exportation of 3D models to 3D PDF and U3D formats.

Pdftex with the movie15 package.

Siemens PLM Software Process Simulate allows export of U3D files.

ESKOArtwork "Studio" a Plugin for Adobe Illustrator, allows export of U3D files.

Pro Engineer Wildfire Allows saving of files to 3D PDF and U3D formats.

Right Hemisphere Deep Server allows export of PDF containing U3D.

Graphisoft ArchiCAD allows export of U3D files.

PDF3D SDK toolkit generates 3D PDF, U3D (with Right Hemisphere Compression) and PRC (file format).

Thanks for the replies guys!

I was thinking that there might be some free-ware out there that would convert a dwg to a u3d - all the ones in that list are piad for.

Yeah i have exported to dwf before but it needs to be a PDF - the Account Managers onoly have PDF readers & we cant expect out clients to install a dwf reader just for us.

I have found 1 way - though it is a bit annoying & the file size is quite large.

AutoCAD > 3DS Max - export as a *.3ds file > Import to Photoshop - Export as u3d > Create 3D PDF in Acrobat Pro.
