bobsun Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 Hi, I would like to ask a question on AutoCAD 3D modeling. In AutoCAD there are many operations we can perform in the 3D modeling workspace: Elements: Box, sphere, wedge, cylinder, cone, pyramid Set operation: Union, subtract, intersect Modify: Extrude, loft, revolve, sweep Rendering light: Point, spot, distant light source And in fact, I find these operations are rather generic among 3D graphic software. A question is on the comparison between AutoCAD 2010 and 3DSMAX, both from Autodesk. 1. Both capable of 3D modeling, then what is the chief difference between them? a. Is 3DSMax intended for animation? b. Does AutoCAD have any 3D animation ability? 2. Not considering animation functionality, for the basic 3D static modeling, can AutoCAD compare with 3DSMAX? Is 3DSMAX better at rendering than AutoCAD? 3. Is 3DSMAX difficult to learn? Are the learning curves for the two software similar? Can experience with AutoCAD 3D modeling be transferred easily to 3DSMAX? 4. Third, if I would like to create a build construction demo in presentation, like in a first-person perspective video game that the visitor would take a virtual tour within in the building, up and down stairs and visiting different rooms, which software is better suited? Thanks, Bob Quote
Bobzy20 Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 Is 3DSMAX better at rendering than AutoCAD? Yes, while both AutoCAD & 3DS Max use the same rendering engine called ‘Mental Ray’ AutoCAD has a cut down version so Max’s is better. Also with Max you can add rendering plug-ins like V-Ray which can enhance your rendering quality. Both AutoCAD and 3DS Max are quite hard to use when you’re just a beginner but after time you will be flying around. Don’t be put off by AutoCAD as some of the renders on this site are very real. bobsun Posted October 5, 2011 Author Posted October 5, 2011 Bobzy20, Thanks for the answer. When you say "put off", do you mean "get intimidated"? Bob Quote
Bobzy20 Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 I just mean AutoCAD is still very good at doing many things and you can achieve great results. Have you ever tried using Max? Quote
bobsun Posted October 5, 2011 Author Posted October 5, 2011 Not yet, I am still an AutoCAD user primarily uses 2D workspace. Quote
