amidesign Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Hello, I have made a large amount of custom parts in a systems furniture drawing I am doing. I made the mistake of putting them all on the same layer and am now realizing i need them to be on separate layers. I tried to just make new layers and then assign the new layers to my custom parts. It acts like it does it but then the parts behave as if they were still on the common layer that i originally created them on. Is there a way to get the custom parts to only be linked to the new layer and not act like they are still on the original layer? My other thought was if i made a new layer, then drew my custom symbol again using that layer... could I then somehow tell my custom part to now use this new symbol that is on the new layer instead of the current symbol that is on the bad layer? I am trying to avoid having to completely start over creating all my parts again because there are at least 30 and I had already put in all of the options, atriubtes, part numbers, pricing, etc... and it would be very time consuming to start that over. ReMark Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Layer Match (LAYMCH) This tool will move an object from one layer to another, by selecting an object as reference. This is similar with MATCHPROP but only matching the layer, not matching any other properties. LAYMCH can be found under Format > Layer Tools. Quote
amidesign Posted November 1, 2011 Author Posted November 1, 2011 Thank you for your help ReMark. I tried both LAYMCH and MATCHPROP but when I try to turn these layers off they still act as if they are on the original layer. For instance I pulled in a new worksurface from CAP explorer and then matched my custom part worksurface to the standard worksurface. Then i went to test it by using the layer off icon to turn off the standard worksurface but it did NOT also turn off my custom worksurface which should now be on the same layer. Any thoughts? Quote
ReMark Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 I'm not familiar with CAD Explorer. What is that? Can we text something? How about we use the old CHANGE command? Invoke the command, pick one of the objects that you want to move to a different layer. Use the LAYER option. Does the object now appear on the correct layer? Yes/No/I can't tell the difference? amidesign Posted November 1, 2011 Author Posted November 1, 2011 It is CAP explorer... it is 2020 software that allows us to bring furniture parts into our drawing. So for instance this is Knoll furniture and i can select parts and pieces from explorer and drag them into my drwg. Here is the interesting thing... when you click on the furniture it all looks like it is on the A-FURN layer. But when you are in a viewport of a layout and you turn some of the furniture off, the standard parts all turn off independently of one another. and when you look in the layer properties it shows that many layers are turned off. So when i tried matching it wants to match to the a-furn layer but then it doesn't help when I am in my viewport trying to turn off only some of the layers. It is almost like standard parts come in on the a-furn layer but also have a secondary layer associated with them and then they actually have a third layer associated with them for the tag. I don't know enough about layers to figure this out! Quote
ReMark Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Can you post a representative drawing (not the entire thing)? You're making my head hurt. It should not be this complicated to move an entity to a new layer. The one thing that could mess it up is if the furniture blocks were not made entirely on layer "0" which is the recommended way of doing things. We won't know until you post something (not an image but an actual dwg file). Thanks. Now I have to go get the bigger bottle of aspirin. Quote
amidesign Posted November 1, 2011 Author Posted November 1, 2011 Ha ha, my head hurts too! I really appreciate you trying to help though! Here is my file. i have include a small portion of the drawing but there are about 5 custom parts, the storage tower, the worksurface, the base, the panel, and the glass add up for the panel... all custom.Help Drwg.dwg Quote
