Currahee Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Hey guys I need help with designing a tubular chassis. I am building a 4wheel drive buggy out of 2" pipe. I would like to design it on AutoCAD but it does not have the ability to try out the articulation of my suspension. Does anyone know a third party software I could add to the software that would allow me to do this. Also, I have never designed anything with tubes what is the easiest way? Is there any LISP's out there to make this job easier? I am so lost right now. Tim Quote
ReMark Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Sounds more like a job for Inventor, Solidworks or AutoDesk Simulation Mechanical 2012. Tube? Make job easier? Are you talking about all the coping and mitres you'll have to deal with? I found a program (cheap) called Easy Kinematics (for AutoCAD 2010) here. Maybe you could use it. http://www.simplecad.com/kinetics-software.htm Even better. freeCAD 3D CAD with Motion Simulation http://www.askoh.com/ Quote

ReMark Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Let's not start the party just yet. Don't know for sure how good/bad either of those programs are and one of the three programs I mentioned at the top of my post are probably going to be more suitable for doing the job. Quote
Currahee Posted December 1, 2011 Author Posted December 1, 2011 I think I will see if Autodesk has the AutoDesk Simulation Mechanical 2012 available for students...since I am working on my Masters maybe I could get it and try it out!? Quote
ReMark Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Good idea. Best of luck to you. Maybe you can post some "in progress" images as you work on the tubular chassis. Quote
Dana W Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Pipe is a no-no. Hopefully you were just using it as a generic term. Mandrel drawn chromemolly steel tube is what you use, of course, usually 1 1/2" dia for the larger tubes is sufficient size. Quote
JD Mather Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 I think I will see if Autodesk has the AutoDesk Simulation Mechanical 2012 available for students...since I am working on my Masters maybe I could get it and try it out!? Students can download Autodesk Inventor Professional for free from http://www.autodesk.com - you will want to start out with the Frame Generator. Inventor will do kinematic motion and also in Inventor Professional you can do Dynamic Simulation which takes into account physics such as gravity, spring forces, friction... Quote

Yes of course, pipe was shorter to write than "Mandrel drawn chromemolly steel tubing"....LOL. Xept I am using 2" Quote

Xept I am using 2" And way more easier to spell too. I hadda look it up, but google wanted me to type "mandrel drawn steel-chromium-molybdenum alloy tubing", and I said No Way Man. Quote

Dana W Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Awwwwww!! What a pwetty widdle doggie! One of my Daisy's favorite playmates at the dog park is a 80 lb Rottie. When the two of them get together it's like watching a couple of M1/A2 Abrams tanks going at it. Huge fun. Here's a close-up of Daisy. She's only 45 lbs and about as dangerous as a chocolate eclair. Great Looking Dog!!! But I have one of those also....The rotty is my inside dog...this dog is my outside dog (he is on a 200ft cable run on a 40ft cable so he can go around the house..LOL) It looks like he has only one eye but that is just the shadow.. Currahee Posted December 2, 2011 Author Posted December 2, 2011 Thanks Admin for letting us put these pics up...I know it is off subject..but we love our dogs just as we love CAD.. Quote
ReMark Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Maybe one of Fido's friends can start a new thread in the Chat forum appropriately called...Who Let the Dogs Out! Quote

LOL...BTW Mark...I just have downloaded the Inventor, I just have finished the install and have rebooted my CAD station...now waiting for it to start and now I just have to figure out how to use it!!! Dana W Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Maybe one of Fido's friends can start a new thread in the Chat forum appropriately called...Who Let the Dogs Out! Ask and yee shall receive. All's somebody has to do is mention a dog and I find a lame reason to post some more poochie pictures. Quote
ReMark Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Maybe we need a max-dog-pics-per-person limit otherwise it will be pictures of just Dana's dog. LOL Quote
