vaul_2.jpgHello everybody!!

I am trying to create a vault of a church by autocad (foto_1) So i need to eliminate part of the surfaces i ve created using the 'extrude' command at the line drawings of arcs. How can i cut these parts (foto_2)?

I ve read about a 'slice' commnad but when i try it i get a message ''no solid objects were selected''.

I also tried to manage it with 3dsmax but it chooses the whole polygone (foto_3). The same passes with Sketchup8.

I will really apreciate any advice!!!! (p.d. i am not very relative to 3dsmax so i would prefer an autocad solution!)

In AutoCAD 2012 You can use trim surfaces to do this. But You are on 2009, so use solid subtraction two times, then explode the solids, remove the unwanted surfaces and combine them.Drawing1.dwg

Thank you a lot for your answer but when i m trying the ''subtract'' command i get a message ''No solids or regions selected.'' I crested my surface by the ''extrude'' command (isn t it suposed to creat solids??)

Any more information-idea will really be useful to me!!

You must have closed profile to create solid.

vault_5.jpgI think i know which is the problem! it maybe doesn t concider my object as solid because its an open surface (foto_1)

but i cant extrude the arc and the polyline as one objext (the join command does not let me join polylines with arcs) so that i can get a surface of these elements and then extrude them..

i hope i didn t confus you!!!

To sum up my problem is how to make a solid of the arc and the polyline that units the two edges of the arc.

Thank you so much! I really need this information!

Not sure why you would be designing a masonry building using surfaces. Solids would be more appropriate. I'd consider using surfaces for something like the skin of an airplane but not for a vaulted roof.

You do know you can join a polyline and an arc using the Pedit command, right?

No! I didn t know it but i just learned and thank you so much!! ReMark you have helped me already like million times! You should tell me your name in order to put it at the acknowledgement part of my diploma thesis!! :D

I hope not having more problems with my vault something that doesn t seem possible!

Thanks a lot to everybody!

You don't owe me an acknowledgement but thank you just the same.

Have you constructed your roof yet?

Hello!!

Maybe i should post a new threat but as my question is relative to creating a 3dsolid in order to be used as part of a vault i m writting here again!

i want to make a 3dsolid of a shape like the one in foto_1. (the surface that is visible is actually a mesh not a solid). but if i try the exrtude command i get a result in foto_2. This is because my arcs are not perpenticular (the exrtruding direcion is the perpenticular one_like in foto_2)

any advice??

thanks a lot!

excactly!!

how have you managed it?

Posted

I drew an arc then mirrored it. I offset the arcs inward and cleaned up the intersection of the two arcs with the Fillet command.

I drew a small line segment from one end of my inner arc and used the fillet command to cleanly intersect it with my outer arc. I mirrored the segment.

Using the PressPull command I extruded this profile and rotated the resultant solid into position.

Thank you so much!! I will try it. For any problem i will ask!

Thanks again a lot!!!

You're entirely welcomed. :)

If you run into a problem with your vault then continue to come back here and seek help. We'll do what we can to assist you. Good luck.

If you already have the surface - you should be able to thicken the surface into a solid.

Thanks a lot for the advice but the thicken command does not work!! my object is not a surface but a polygon mesh ( i created it with the edgesurf command).

ReMark!I m stuck here! in the picture_1 is what i understand from your solution (i think i ve misanderstood something!!) If it s what you mean until this point, the fillet command does not clean the intersection of the 2 arcs. Should i use the break command?

p.s. the PressPull command extrudes perpenticular the object so i am not sure if it can do what i want beacause i don t need a perpenticular extruding and then rotate it. i need a solid that begins from a bigger arc and fiinshes in a smaller one (foto_2)

thanks a lot!!

Then use the TRIM command to clean up where the two arcs cross and use the loft command to create your vault.

Can you post a copy of the profiles you are working with?
