I have always selected a logical location in the block geometry as my insertion point. I don't recall ever using 0,0,0

Nor do I.

I don't actually use 0,0,0 as the insertion point myself, but it seemed that it might solve the issue raised.

My guess is that typical drawings of nets are not on such a huge scale that it would pose much of a problem.

I just zoom extents and deal with it. :)
