stormyk Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Hi I am really hoping someone can help me. We have been using Autocad 2000 32 bitfor many years and just recently upgraded the laptop with windows 7 64 bit and upgraded to Autocad 2010 64 bit. We cannot view the autocad 2000 drawings in the new autocad, it keeps freezing. I understand its a compatibility issue. How can we convert the drawings? I did download TrueView but it only gives me the latest option to convert to as 2007. I really hope someone can help me ASAP. Thanks Quote
ReMark Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 It has nothing to do with converting drawings. Your version of AutoCAD 2010 even though it is 64-bit should be able to open the drawings and they should be fully editable. It is the program (AutoCAD) that is 64-bit and not the DWG file you are working with. There has to be another reason AutoCAD is freezing. Quote
stormyk Posted June 13, 2012 Author Posted June 13, 2012 Well when i did some asking around I was told its because the drawings are saved in autocad 2000 (which is 32 bit) and its not compatible with autocad 2010 because its 64 bit. Quote
ReMark Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Don't believe everything you hear. I have hundreds of files that were created using 32-bit versions of AutoCAD that I can open with no problem on my Win7 Ultimate 64-bit computer running AutoCAD 2013 64-bit. Quote
nestly Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 I would agree that it's not a problem with the drawing format, it's more likely an issue with AutoCAD2010 and the computer. Does the computer meet the minimum system requirements for AutoCAD2010? If it does, it may still be that you need to disable some Windows and/or AutoCAD features to get acceptable performance. How large are the drawings, and when you say "Freezing", does that mean AutoCAD or Windows stops responding and needs to be forcibly shut down/restarted? http://images.autodesk.com/apac_sapac_main/files/acad10_sys_reqts.pdf Quote
ReMark Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 I just ran a test. I found a disk of old drawings created using AutoCAD Release 9 which I'm pretty sure used 16-bit code. I copied a file off the disk to my hard drive and then used AutoCAD 2013 64-bit to open it. No problem. I'd say your "rumor" has been busted. Quote
nestly Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 There is no difference between a drawing saved by 32bit AutoCAD and 64bit AutoCAD, Like ReMark, I share drawings back and forth between 32bit and 64bit computers frequently. However it's not impossible that there is something in those drawings that AutoCAD2010 doesn't like. You can post one of them if you like, and we'll be happy to have a look at it and even re-save it in 2010 format for you to test. Quote
stormyk Posted June 13, 2012 Author Posted June 13, 2012 Yes it just freezez completely more often than not when we open the layout of the drawing, and we have to forcibly restart the laptop Quote
stormyk Posted June 13, 2012 Author Posted June 13, 2012 Ok, how do I post a drawing on here for you to test? Quote
nestly Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 There is a "Go Advanced" button at the bottom right of the Quick Reply window. Inside there, you should see an option to "Manage Attachments" where you can upload a .dwg file that is up to 500KB in size. Quote
stormyk Posted June 13, 2012 Author Posted June 13, 2012 the drawings are only a couple if KB each Quote
ReMark Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 What are the specs on this laptop? Can't be much of a problem then. It takes less than a minute to attach a drawing to a post. Quote
stormyk Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 Morning Everytime i go to 'go advanced' and click on manage attachements it goes to the Ziinga site. Could I possibly email that drawing to you Nestly? Quote
stormyk Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 The laptop he got is a i5 processor, 4 GB RAM and 500GB hardrive Quote

nestly Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 I didn't notice anything that should cause a problem with the drawings. Here's the first drawing saved in 2010 format. Does AutoCAD2010 work OK on the laptop when a new drawing is started from scratch? CUTTING 450 X 750 BAKING TRAYS-1_2010.dwg Quote
stormyk Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 Thanks, I am going to give it a try now. Yes, we created a new drawing in 2010, saved it, closed autocad, reopened it and opened the drawing no problem. Quote
stormyk Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 First time i tried it - it worked perfectly. Second time i tried it now to show my husband, it froze a few seconds after i showed him the layout then back to the model. Any ideas what we can do? Quote
