Ultrabook or mobile workstation?

I'm thinking to buy a new laptop. My first choice would be HP mobile workstation 8470W. I have good experience with mobile workstation before, but this is for my personal use. The problem the graphic card is AMD FirePro M2000, which is not certified.

So, I'm tempted to try Ultrabook too. It's light and has long battery life. I will carry it a lot on my backpack. But I'm not so sure if AutoCAD will run smoothly on it.

It's not for daily complex task. I will only use it for presentation and training purpose.

So I would like to have your opinion: mobile workstation with not certified graphic card... or Ultrabook at about the same price? If you think Ultrabook can work, what is your suggested brand and type?

Thank you for reading this 8)

If the Ultrabook is equipped with the new Intel processor that has the video GPU directly on the processor die then it'll do just fine. It scores insane high on Windows 7 benchmarks. Runs the new games and everything. I believe it's on the newer Core i5 chips.

Thanks Tannar,

It would be great if I can use Ultrabook :D. The size and weight really match my need. I just wonder if AutoCAD can run without problem.

Has anyone used Ultrabook for AutoCAD yet? Care to share your experience?

I don't know, I have yet to mess with the new Intel video solutions. I guess I am just gun-shy of trusting a non dedicated GPU to handle my CAD and 3D work. Never been impressed with Intel graphics before.

The Dell Inspiron 14z at least has the option of having a dedicated ATI RadeonHD 7570 with 1gb of dedicated ram. Not sure what you can get where you are.

Dude, I'm telling you... Intel finally hit it right on their integrated graphics. They score super high on benchmarks. I have a friend who has one in a Core i5 or i7 (can't remember) and it out performs my dedicated GPU.

Good to hear that.

I will carry this laptop a lot. So I want it has decent performance for CAD but as light as possible.

I think I'll go with Ultrabook 8)

But it's not going to be Acer. Had bad experience with local post sales support :x

That's cool, we all have our own experiences with different products. I would look for the Intel HD4000 graphics if you go this route and make sure that the system is the 3rd generation based system. These seem to have the best performance. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Just wanted to see if you got it and how it is working out? I use Revit and CAD and looking hard at the ultrabook / convertibles because I travel a lot for work. A lot of people say it will be fine. A lot of people say it will not...

It will, but it won't. It'll definitely "work" but at what cost? Ultimately it depends on the size of your Revit projects. I run Revit 2013 & AutoCAD MEP 2012 on a five year old computer with a decent gaming video card for its day and it "works". The program opens, everything runs, etc. But the performance just isn't where I truly need it to be.

It's gonna be one of those scenarios. :)

Yea and that has been most peoples answer. Thanks for the honest opinion. That is what I am afraid of.. Our models are not huge, I think the largest one to date is about 120 mb but most are 60 and under.

But, I am on a Precision M2400 and facing the "it works" but does not perform where I want it to be.

I guess that tells me something....

Have you seen any small workstations out there? Just really trying to avoid the 6 lb massive laptop I have now... Smaller than my old one but when you fly and travel every week it is a lot!
