AutoCAD Speed Issues

In another thread, I asked a question. Rather than continue to highjack that thread, I am moving the question here:

 

 

I'm having considerable speed issues as well with AutoCAD 2007. It takes a long time to open up AutoCAD, and every time I access a menu option to do anything, even if there is nothing in model space, it pauses for 8-10 seconds before I can do anything. This makes using the program a chore. I had an older PC which used the same program and had no issues of this sort.

 

My computer is a brand new PC laptop with the following specs:

 

CPU: Duo T9400

Display: 15.4" WSXGA+

ODD: DVD Sup MTI

HD: 500 GB

Memory: 4 GB

OS Windows XP

 

Any suggestions? Would an AutoCAD reinstall be helpful? Or is there a more insidious cause, or a setting that I can turn off?

 

Now regarding your question. The first thing that comes to mind is the fact you are using XP (which version by the way?)

and you have 4GB RAM installed. I think you might benefit from a change to your boot.ini file. But before we go there, have you installed all the service packs for 2007?

 

I believe I installed them upon my re-installation of AutoCAD, which occurred last week. I can open up AutoCAD to see what I can update.

Just a poke in the dark, but maybe check your options, support files search path, I remember once coping a profile and this happening on one system that had network locations labeled differnetly. everytime it would pause for several seconds before continuing...

I hate to do this to you but you might want to go back to that previous post for just a minute. rkent, another forum member, just posted a number of excellent suggestions you might look into before we go any further. When you are satisfied you've done all you can and if you still have a problem then I suggest coming back here to tell us what you did so we don't repeat the same advice. OK?

Here is one more suggestion. Visit the AutoDesk website. In the upper right hand corner of the first webpage you'll see a Search function box. Type in the following including the quotation marks: "AutoCAD 2007". At the webpage you are taken to will be the results of the search. There is an option to "Search these results". Do so, but now change the search criteria to one word: slow. The resultant search should bring up a sublist of just six items. Two of them may be of interest to you. They are Delay when accessing menu commands and Takes long time to start. Read both of these short articles.

I saw that list too. I might have some questions on how to perform some of those actions.

 

It just seems odd to me that this started from the second I reinstalled AutoCAD and it had no history, multiple windows, or other issues that would have clogged it down, and it ran just fine on a slower computer. I'm hoping it's a simple enough setting issue.

what about video card? need a good one to be able to zoom draw navigate etc FAST FAST..

That definitely does seem odd. Regarding your new computer, does it have a separate graphics card or does it rely on an onboard graphics chip that also requires help from the CPU to handle the graphics load? That could make a world of difference right there.

"Delay when accessing menu commands" solved my problem immediately. Apparently, there are two files in looks for in the folder menu options are in. If one file does not exist, it takes several seconds to determine that. Making an empty text file with the right name solves the problem instantly.

 

Takes a long time to start didn't help, but that was certainly the lesser of the two problems, and one I can live with.
