bm23 Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 I'm working on an architectural model and it has quite a number of hi-poly tree models. My file size currently stands at 2.4gb. Is there anyway I can reduce the size? Quote
Cad64 Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Create proxies for your trees: https://www.google.com/#hl=en&tbo=d&sclient=psy-ab&q=3ds+max+mental+ray+proxy&oq=3ds+max+mental+ray+proxy&gs_l=hp.3..35i39j0.811.6676.0.8035.24.24.0.0.0.0.187.2368.18j6.24.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.1.Ej4-B_ISkbY&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=90608e72b45b1351&bpcl=38093640&biw=1497&bih=811 You can also xref parts of your model to help further decrease file size. bm23 Posted November 13, 2012 Author Posted November 13, 2012 I'm using vray. will that work too? If im not wrong, there's also vray proxy. I will take a look. Quote
bm23 Posted November 13, 2012 Author Posted November 13, 2012 I figured it out. Thanks so much! Didn't know it was this easy. I was afraid of having to upgrade my RAM as my scene alone takes up 12-13gb of RAM, out of my available 16. The proxies helped to reduce the file size considerably Quote
Cad64 Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Yeah proxies are awesome. I used to struggle with projects containing lots of trees and shrubs, and my computer would slow to a crawl. But once I started using proxies it made my life so much easier. Quote
Cad64 Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 i rarely use them If you do landscape/environment work, with lots of high poly trees and shrubs, proxies are a must. I've worked on scenes containing several hundred plants and trees and there is no way I could have done that without proxies. My computer would have choked and died. Quote
