Do not go for one of the inbuilt scales. You have to use a custom scale as I pointed out in my first reply.

Are you plotting from Model space or Paper space? If you are plotting from Paper space, what scale is your viewport?

I didn't create a viewport. I just clicked on a layout tab, clicked on the border of the map and once this was highlighed, I tried to use a metric scale from the bottom toolbar.

I take it that I've been totally wrong with this.

I am due to start an AutoCAD class tonight but I just need to know enough to put a proposed agricultural building in for planning permission.

The default in AutoCAD for a layout is to already have a single viewport available.

What do you know about viewports?

I remember creating and saving a few when I used AutoCAD 7 years ago. That's about it

(I have not sent this from my iPad).

I need to get that one on some letterhead stationary.

I had my first AutoCAD class last night. I showed the OS map to the tutor who has been teaching CAD for over 15 years. She told me to write an email to where I bought the map to complain that a metric map should have a metric scale.

Does anyone mind giving me a step by step set of instructions so that I can get the plans off to the planners today? My boss is beginning to be impatient about this.

I just need to know how to use a drawing template and to show the location at a scale of 1:5000 and 1:500.

After this, I'll continue with my class and workbooks.

eldon said the ordnance survey is in meters but the plot scales, for some unknown reason, are in imperial units. Therefore you have to edit the scale list and add the appropriate metric scales. This can be done via the SCALELISTEDIT command.

Once you have added the necessary scales then they can be applied to the viewport(s). Note that since you would be plotting from a layout the plot scale will be 1 mm = 1 unit. AutoCAD will automatically scale the contents of your viewport(s) based upon the assigned scale and plot them correctly.

Thanks for your replies. It is sorted now. 8)

I have another question but it is not worth starting a new thread for:

I am now going to draw the structure of the same project. I want to end up with the paper space layout tabs showing each elevation, details and plans etc. Do I therefore draw them in model space beside the OS map or should I start a brand new drawing file?

You can do it either way. Right now, as long as your file is not so big that it's slow to work it, it's probably easier to draw the structure next to the OS map. I would recommend drawing them a good bit away from the map so you have space around it. It doesn't matter later when you use Viewports to get it all together on the layout.

If you want to start a new DWG for your structure, but need to have both the map and the structure on the same layout in the end - you need to explore External References. Your class will probably cover that.

Thanks Tiger. I'll draw the elevations beside the map for now.
