Too bad. I think there are more users of the free version than there are of either version you mention.

Yes of course Free users will be more compared to paid users.

DraftSight is growing with every release, I have worked on both AutoCAD and DraftSight. You can run Most of the AutoCAD commands as it is(from command line) in DraftSight if you are not familiar with DraftSight commands. In terms of UI it is still same as AutoCAD classic workspace.

Depending upon your requirement and budget you can opt any CAD software.:)

Well since you mentioned it is there a command in DS equivalent to AutoCAD's -dwgunits?

You'd be surprised at the number of people who prefer free over paid who come here asking about CAD programs. Yep, if trouble were money I'd be a millionaire too.

Well there is no such system variable -dwgunits in DraftSight (till DraftSight 2015) as per my knowledge.

DraftSight works unit less by default and it shows Drawing units of your AutoCAD dwg file.

Well the question came up regarding drawings one might do in millimeters vs. those one might do in meters. How would one go about setting that up in DS?

Posted

If you Create two files in AutoCAD with Inch and mm units respectively then DraftSight will open each file as it is. As Drawing unit is a property of Drawing file it changes with Drawing. If you create Entity(object) then it will be created as per your saved AutoCAD drawing units.

If you open both files and tile widnow then you can see difference.

Question comes when we have to import Xref or block well in that case DraftSight converts units(1 inch = 25.4 mm and viceversa) and place units (same as AutoCAD). Also you can change Block/Xref units from UNITSYSTEM command.

Draftsight is a pretty decent free cad software package. It's not as smooth to operate as AutoCAD, but it doesnt have anything that 'sticks' out to make it a market leader.

I've found that when it comes to formatting template files it can be a little cumbersome but not overly bearing.

Also, some of the system settings and setting up of file locations can cause issues if you export them out and install on another computer. (that may just have been me though)

All in all, I used draftsight with no makor issues for 3 years, I've now moved into a job with AutoCAD, and there is a notacable difference, but that may also come down to personal preference for me.

As it's free, it would be worthwhile just downloading it and testing it out, 99% of the commands are the same as AutoCAD LT.

One other thing, If you create a drawing in draftsight, AutoCAD will come up with a message stating "this was not created using an autodesk product" but this is neither relevent or a problem.

You are right Stevie.

I think we should not Compare DraftSight with AutoCAD as DraftSight is new and developing product.

We should compare DraftSight with AutoCAD LT. DraftSight is available in free as well as paid version.

DraftSight annual cost of 1 license is $299 and they are offering discount also last I heard was 25%. Whereas AutoCAD LT price is too high for annual subscription .

You can open almost every dwg file, which is created or saved in AutoCAD. If you can't report it to DraftSight team they will fix problem as soon as possible.

DraftSight supports Script, LISP & API (VB.net, C# , C++, Javascript) .

I am not against of AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT , in fact I love them . When it comes to cost well DraftSight will be my choice but it depends on your purpose of using CAD Software.

Some AutoDesk products can be leased which might be a good alternative for some companies or individuals.

What is the most current DWG file format Draftsight (the free version) supports? I thought someone here recently said it was now 2013. It was 2010 if I recall correctly.

Yes I like this leasing policy of AutoCAD. DraftSight currently Supports 2013 dwg file format (as of DS 2015)
