Hi all! I'm a CAD newbie- just started using it a few weeks ago and am coming up on a deadline for a modelling assignment. I've already constructed the main cylinder and now must complete the lid. Easily the trickiest part :D

The only 3d techniques im familiar with are extrude, sweep, and revolve. My limited skills leave me a bit lost as to how I even start this object. How would you go about making the lid i've attached? I don't need the inner surfaces. My only concern is presenting the main body and lid as a single attached solid. Given my current skill, i'm going to pass on the lettering and depressed liquid symbol as well.

I've also attached the main body of my travel cup for reference if it helps with my questions.

Thank you very much in advance! I can tell this is quite an active community and all of the assistance you pros offer is worth the world for newbies like me.

Here is an overlay with the surface-volumes im looking to create. Purple is the main body, and green appears to be a separately made housing for yellow to press in. I'm also scratching my head figuring out how i'll create the proper concave solid to subtract from my lid (once i get that). Sorry for such a poorly lit series of shots by the way- this one may be easier to analyze.

I thought that either Dadgad or JD Mather would jump all over this but the only two posts are yours. Unusual.

BTW...It appears that the lid has a taper to it from top to bottom. Is that correct?

Unless someone has the exact same thermos they will have to guesstimate the measurements and come up with something that looks similar.

My clumsy/rough approximation of the upper portion of the thermos lid. But you get the idea don't you?

BTW...you can get the taper (which I did not bother to get into) using the Extrude command and Taper option or use Loft with two circles of different diameters.

OK JDM show us some magic.

Not knowing what your allowed to do or not do I would think that this might be a good test for 2013's Mesh Tools. Sure these tools might be above your skill set for the moment but might be worth a look, that is if you have time to look into them.

Again, not sure on if you are supposed to use Solids or not.

Translation for those of you who don't normally deal with students - "the assignment is due tomorrow morning".

I thought from the beginning that it looked like too ambitious a project for the experience level described.

I hear there is good money in fishing (for some).
