Solid Hatch won't stretch

Recommended Posts

I have been having an issue with my hatches, especially when I use solid. I always make them associative but when I have to move an object using stretch, the hatch does not come along with it.

When I hatch an item I generally use the "pick points" option. Do I need to be using select objects? Or is there something else that I am missing?

Thank you

A quick test of the "pick points" method using a solid hatch and with "associative" enabled confirms it should work. I am using 2013.

Here is what happens when I try to stretch it

And this happens in any drawing you are working in?

Yes. I thought at first it was the way the hatch was created by previous draftsperson, but when I did this one I ensured that it was associative.

Can you attach a copy of the drawing to your next post?

Unfortunately I can't. It is our company policy not to send or post any editable files. I know it makes it difficult to help, but I am fairly new at this job and I would like to keep it

We don't need the whole drawing. We need a small portion of it that has one of these misbehaving hatched objects. We don't need any: text, dimensions, notes, title blocks, or anything that would identify your company.

Turn on and thaw all layers as a test, now try stretching the hatch.

Here is a section of the drawing. I re-did the hatch this morning and I still get the same result

Start a new drawing.

Draw a rectangle.

Fill it with a solid hatch.

Make sure it is "associative".

Stretch it. What happens?

Who created the drawing and what program was used originally?

It is fine in a new drawing.

We tend to use old drawings as the base or new drawings since the structure etc is exactly the same and then we just have to modify the interior partitions. When I looked into the drawing properties it says the drawing was originally created in 2008, so I am not sure what version of autocad would have been used back then. I am not sure if there is a way to tell what version it was originally created in.

I was trying to stretch another hatch as well (denoting ductwork) and it did not stretch and when I select hatch edit, the 'associative' box is not checked although I know that I selected it when originally creating it. I tried drawing a rectangle and a few other shapes within the same drawing and hatching and stretching those and they worked fine.

You can have your sample back now.

That is one of the weirdest drawings I've seen. Did you know that your geometry is off on that pipe with the solid hatch. Who drew it?

Argh. Companies that use old software to save a dime so the president can get the leather trim package in his new Lexus. Argh.

Here's your sample drawing back saved in 2007 file format.

It would have been the previous person who worked here that drew it.

We are actually currently getting quotes for upgrading our software. The company that I work for is quite small but the owner is always very open to ways to improve workflow, so I suggested going to a 3D platform. It would take a little more design time upfront, but we would save a ton of time when it comes to creating views and making changes. We are looking to go to either the Autodesk BDS Ultimate or with Solidworks premium. We are waiting for an autodesk demo later this week and will hopefully have something purchased by next week.

Did you open the drawing I posted? I fixed your problem.

Thank you. I did finally get to open and look at it. Can you tell me how you fixed it? I have several drawings that have the same issue and it is annoying that I have to rehatch something everytime I modify it.

I can't wait until we go 3D....my life will get so much easier!! (once I learn the new software of course )

I recreated the underlying geometry.

Click on the hatch and move its points over to where you want them to be. The hatch points move independant of the lines. This only works in Version 2013.

Was this tested using the OP's drawing?
