3ds Max - Advice needed on how to make this!

Hello,

 

I'm new to this forum and I'm very new to 3ds Max, so please forgive me if this is a particularly easy task, but I'm having a bit of trouble with it.

 

I'd like to model the attached picture in 3ds Max 9. It's kind of a blobby shrimp creature thing. I'm just unsure as to how I should tackle it - I've tried splitting it into 4 different spheres and then connecting them up; I've tried box-modelling it; I've tried tracing around it using a spline and then extruding it. Nothing has worked. I can't get the kind of blobby, squashed look to it.

 

I'm not at a sufficient level of knowledge yet to know exactly how I should be doing this correctly. Can anyone please help?

You right there have its profile "side shot"

To model you must try to identify basic primitives and what i see in this shot are about 3 spherical components creating the basic body.

To adjust them to resemble the object i would scale them down or use the squeeze modifier.

The eyes would be created using a cylinder with a few bevel operations, Or you can create the eye using another sphere scaled down.

You can also use the squeeze modifier to create the mouth the squeeze modifier can make the sphere long in an attractive way that resembles the mouth open to 180 degrees

then you would just delete half the mouth object rotate and duplicate.

That would be my aproach though to give you a genuine reply i would have to do it in 3ds Max, but I'm nowhere near a computer with Max loaded on it.

I might try this at home just as a rendering/modeling excersise.

Excellent! Thanks for the advice Raudel Solis! I'm just unsure as to how to combine the spheres for the shape. I mean, Boolean doesn't really work for me here as I'll probably need to be able to combine the vertices together, right?

 

If you do actually get around to making this model, I'd love to see how you get on with it. Thanks again for your help!

I would use a sculpting program like ZBrush, Mudbox or 3D Coat for something like this. Or, if you don't want to purchase another program, you could use the free Sculptris or Blender.

Excellent, thanks for the advice Cad64. I was thinking ZBrush might have a more organic look alright, but I was really hoping to create it in 3ds Max. Oh well. I'll give Blender and Sculptris a look. Thanks!
