johnshar123xx Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 AutoCAD 2008 Two Tough Questions about Xrefs 1.) Okay, picture this, you have two drawings opened. One of the drawings is an xref, and the other is a drawing that has this xref attached to it. Next you make some changes to the xref and you save the drawing. Now when you go into the drawing that has the xref attached to it, you see a pop up balloon in the lower right corner that states the xref has been changed and it gives you the ability to reload the xref from this balloon. My question is, is there a way to have the xref automatically re-load itself, without having the pop up balloon appear, asking you to re-load the xref? 2.) Okay, again you have two drawings... Drawing A = Xref Drawing B = drawing xref (drawing A) is attached to Basically Drawing A is xreffed into Drawing B Now lets say I make some changes to some layers in Drawing A such as lineweights, linetypes, layer colors, etc. and I save Drawing A. When you go into Drawing B and reload the xref, the layer properties I changed in Drawing A do not carry over to Drawing B. My question is, is there a way to make set a drawings layers as the "master" set, where there settings hold true in all drawings? At this moment in time I only know of a setting known as "VISRETAIN", my problem with this setting is, when you use it it turns on, unfreezes, etc. making all the layers in the drawing visible. Thank You Quote

Thank You For me VISRETAIN works fine. If you set it to '0' and change the properties of the layer in the XRef drawing it carries over to the master drawing and it doesn't unfreeze it (if it's frozen in the XREF) when the XREF is reloaded. Therefore, I couldn't reproduce what you said above. The only thing that I can think of is that maybe you are changing the properties of layer 0, eg freezing it, in the Xref drawing. Then if layer 0 is thawed in the master drawing, when the Xref is reloaded, there will be a conflict of layer names and the master drawing layer properties will take precedence thus thawing layer 0. The same would happen for other properties of layer 0. Quote
