I am new to the solid 3D. I have a simple solid channel of 260 m length (shape of rectangular drain), The bottom slab I wanted to tapered outward say by 1 degree. I used solid edit > face> taper> choose the bottom face, choose the axis (longer) and give the angle, then error shows

"No loop through new edges and vertices." sometimes

"Modelling Operation Error:

Change in topology detected."

Please help.

Regards

if i've understood what you want to achieve correctly, you've gone about it a difficult way.

i would draw some rectangles for the profile, then loft....either rounded or (more likely) straight edged.

sounds like 3 rectangles would do for you......2 the same size, and the 3rd for the larger profile of the end of the tapered section. maybe shell afterwards if needed.

with 3D, before you start drawing, it's worth taking 5 mins to think about the best way to proceed.

It's also a good idea (imo) at various stages to copy the object and work on the copy......if you close the program and re-open it, you cannot use undo. occassionally it's quicker to 'start over' with an object (or go back somewhat) than carry on down the wrong route.

The usual - attach your dwg file here that exhibits this behavior.

I cannot understand why we even create dwg files if we aren't going to use them for their intended purpose - communication of design intent.

Thanks all for the reply!!!!!!

My only intention why not I can use taper command. May be it is not the easiest one.

I couldn't upload the file. Error shows failed to upload. Is there any size restriction. My file size is 2.5 MB.

Yes, the max file size restriction for dwg files is 1mb. I was going to suggest Dropbox, but I see you've already done it.

@Mr. JD Mather @mikekmx now you can reply as I have posted the dwg file.

absolutely. I was trying to taper the bottom two surfaces with same amount of rotation. Why it is not working........??@@

I do not see your file posted here. Surely it does not take a huge file to demonstrate the behavior you are seeing?

I did not use the Taper Faces command. JDM can demonstrate that one for you. I created a second profile at the near end and lofted the two.

JDM: See post #6 for link to Dropbox.

I saw post #6.

I do not go to third part sites to download files.

Surely the same problem can be demonstrated in a very very very tiny dwg file?

Maybe in a while I will check from my secure (Deep Freeze) machine.

Dropbox is a generally accepted way for people to share files. I have not encountered any problems downloading files nor have I had any bad experiences. But one can never be too careful.

Thanks ReMark for your cooperation. I have re upload the file in post 6 after purging and removing title blocks of layout. Hope this helps.

I had no problem with going to Dropbox and downloading your file. JDM is more cautious and I cannot blame him.

I didn't take the time to figure out why this simple part file is so large, but what trouble are you having with Taper Faces?

I tried on your part and it was pretty simple.

... The bottom slab... choose the bottom face....

Regards

These words don't make sense to me - color the face you want to edit (bottom is all relative).

Start a new file with nothing else and just a short extrusion to keep this simple (and small).

Click the face to draft. (make sure you click a face - not an edge (which would select two faces))

Click vertext point for defining draft angle.

Click any point along draft angle.

Enter draft angle (might be - (minus) depending on your UCS).

Face Draft - Taper Face.dwg BTW type -dwgunits and check your units.

I think the end result he was trying to achieve was something like the image I posted earlier. I agree that his reference to the "bottom" of the channel wasn't exactly clear.

Perhaps it all boils down to the OP not fully understanding what part(s) of the geometry AutoCAD is prompting him to pick?
